Job summary

Ivy Tech Community College is seeking adjunct faculty to teach Social Sciences, including anthropology, economics, sociology, geography, history, and political science. Positions are temporary, part-time, and hired each semester to maintain a pool of qualified candidates for future openings.

The role involves delivering instruction, preparing syllabi, tracking attendance and grades, and being available to students outside of class time. Training and compliance with college policies are required.

Qualifications

• Master's or higher degree in the relevant discipline or a master's with 18 graduate hours in the discipline.
• Ability to teach in Social Sciences including anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science and sociology.
• Experience or credentials per ASOM 7.1 applicable to the area of instruction.

Responsibilities

• Create learning environments and teach courses using common syllabi.
• Provide effective instruction and assessment; maintain attendance and grading records.
• Prepare course syllabus and meet scheduled class times; use Canvas and other tech as needed.
• Hold office hours and assist students outside class as needed.

Education

Anthropology: master's or higher or 18 grad hours in anthropology

Economics: master's or higher or 18 grad hours in economics

Geography: master's or higher or 18 grad hours in geography

History: master's or higher in history or 18 grad hours in history

Political Science: master's or higher or 18 grad hours in political science

Sociology: master's or higher or 18 grad hours in sociology

Job description

Adjunct Faculty positions are temporary, part-time positions hired each semester on an as-needed basis. The adjunct faculty member will be responsible for creating a learning environment that assists students in reaching their goals; and for providing effective instruction and assessment within the framework of common syllabi provided by the School. Social Sciences includes: anthropology, economics and sociology. This position and the posting will stay open continuously in order to build a pool of qualified candidates for future openings as Adjunct Instructors. Applicants will not be notified unless there is an actual need to fill the position or if the candidate does not meet minimum requirements.

PROGRAM OPERATION:

Perform all instructional duties necessary to teach and facilitate student learning in assigned classes. Provide syllabus appropriate to course(s) being taught to students and follows syllabus content and requirements. Maintain student attendance and grading records according to College policy as outlined in the Adjunct Handbook. Submits requested information within established timelines.

STUDENTS:

Is available to students outside scheduled class time to answer questions/provide assistance. Deal with student concerns and, if necessary, consult with program coordinator to resolve issues.

INSTRUCTION:

Meet all scheduled classes of contracted course(s). Use technology such as Canvas, PowerPoint, etc. as appropriate. In event of emergency absence, notifies program/department chair.

Must have strong working knowledge of current technologies appropriate to area of instruction, faculty credentials as outlined in the ASOM 7.1 as applicable to the specific area of instruction.

• A qualified faculty member in anthropology is one who has an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in anthropology, or a master's degree with 18 graduate semester hours in anthropology.
• A qualified faculty member in economics is one who has an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in economics, or a master's degree with 18 graduate semester hours in economics.
• A qualified faculty member in geography is one who has an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in geography, or a master's with 18 graduate semester hours in geography-related courses.
• A qualified faculty member in history meets the discipline standard through one of two routes:
  Possesses an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in history; or
  Possesses an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in any field with 18 graduate semester hours in history.
• A qualified faculty member in political science is one who has an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in political science, a master's degree with 18 graduate semester hours in political science-related courses, or a Juris Doctor degree from a regionally accredited institution.
• A qualified faculty member in sociology is one who has an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in sociology or social work, or a master's degree with 18 graduate semester hours in sociology.
