Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is seeking an Adjunct Faculty member to teach English as a Second Language in the noncredit/ESL discipline.

Qualifications

• All faculty must meet state-adopted minimum qualifications or locally established equivalencies.
• Bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language, or related fields, plus a TESL certificate.
• Experience teaching English as a second language in accredited institutions is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Teach assigned ESL courses meeting the department's standards and course outlines.
• Prepare and evaluate student work, maintain currency in the subject matter.
• Submit attendance rosters and grade reports as due.
• Provide a written course syllabus at course start and refer students to college resources.
• Create an inclusive classroom environment free from harassment or bias.
• Collaborate with college staff and support services to help students succeed.

• The teaching assignment may require teaching lecture-discussion courses during day, evening, or on Saturday and/or in an on-line/distance education format.
• The assignments are based on departmental need on a quarter-by-quarter basis.
• Applicant will secure and maintain home internet access during the duration of their employment to ensure regular and consistent contact with students.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES :

Under the direction of the Dean of Workforce Development and Instruction and in collaboration with the ADVANCE adult education consortium, teach assigned courses in the English as a Second Language ( ESL ): Noncredit discipline’s curriculum. Experience teaching adults at the low beginning and high beginning levels, and multiple modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, and online) is preferred.

• Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation for in-class or on-line/distance education activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class and/or on-line, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.
• Maintain accurate class and other records required by the district.
• Submit, when due, attendance rosters and grade reports.
• Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
• Observe, support, and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District.
• Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course.
• Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
• Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members’ area of expertise.
• Maintain an effective classroom environment and workspace.
• Work cooperatively within the college community.
• Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
• Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of everyone.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Requirements: All faculty must meet state-adopted minimum qualifications or the locally established equivalencies.

Bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages OR Bachelor’s degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor

OR Bachelor’s degree with any of the majors specified in subparagraph (2) above; and one year of experience teaching English as a second language in an accredited institution; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor

OR Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in English as a second language.

OR the equivalent

AND

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
