Description
The University of New England invites applications for the position of Adjunct Faculty in Developmental Mathematics. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching developmental-level prerequisite courses designed to prepare students for college-level coursework in math and science. This role is ideal for educators passionate about student success and committed to fostering a supportive learning environment for diverse learners.
The adjunct faculty member will provide instructional support during the Fall 2026 semester, with the contract period being September 2, 2026, through December 18, 2026. This position requires mandatory on-campus availability during scheduled class periods. The available class times are:
Monday & Thursday, 11:00 AM-12:20 PM
Monday & Thursday, 3:30 PM-4:50 PM
In addition to scheduled class time, adjunct faculty should anticipate approximately 1-2 additional hours per week for course preparation, grading, student support, and other course-related responsibilities. The exact time commitment may vary based on prior teaching experience, course needs, and preparation requirements.

Responsibilities



  • Teach one section of a developmental mathematics course (Introductory Algebra & Problem Solving or Advanced Algebra & Problem Solving).

  • Prepare and deliver engaging, student-centered instruction in accordance with departmental guidelines and course objectives.

  • Develop course materials like handouts and worksheets to supplement the text and online practice problems.

  • Familiarity with online platforms like Pearson's MyLab.

  • Assess student progress through assignments, exams, and other evaluation methods.

  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and performance on the D2L Brightspace Learning Management System

  • Utilize Navigate to identify and respond to student concerns and support student success

  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to encourage and motivate students and build their confidence and skills.

  • Assist students in managing course logistics.

  • Support struggling students toward success.

  • Establish effective communication with students and hold regular office hours or provide virtual support to assist students outside of class.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with the Assistant Director for Student Academic Support


Qualifications



  • Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field combined with relevant experience.

  • At least two years' experience teaching mathematics at the high school, community college, or university level.

  • Commitment to inclusive teaching and motivational skills; ability to adapt to individual and diverse learning needs

  • Sensitivity to needs of under-prepared, non-traditional, and struggling students and diverse learners.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication skills, and the ability to work both one-on-one with students and in small groups

  • Commitment to working collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff

  • Ability to work independently, without direct supervision, organize workflow, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to analyze/solve problems and exercise judgement in resolving or referring special or non-routine situations.

  • Proficient in computer usage, particularly in Microsoft Office and web-based delivery of instruction.


Preferred



  • Experience teaching developmental mathematics in a higher education setting.

  • Familiarity with Brightspace learning management systems.

  • Knowledge of active learning strategies and developmental education best practices.
