Brightpoint Community College in Virginia is seeking qualified adjunct instructors to teach courses at the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) in Petersburg. Teaching may cover Biology, Communication, English, History, Human Services, Mental Health, Math, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Safety and Welding.

Instructors will attend a four-hour in-person training at FCC Petersburg and must comply with prison policies and safety protocols, with classes held in person during the day.

Qualifications

• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills required.
• Minimum of a master’s degree in the discipline or related field with 18 graduate hours.
• High school diploma or equivalent with 5 years of experience in the field or an associate’s degree with 4 years of experience in the field.

General Information: Adjunct faculty teaching is limited to a maximum of 8 credit hours in the summer semester, 12 credit hours in the fall semester, and 12 credit hours in the spring semester. These limits are for total number of credit hours taught in the Virginia’s Community Colleges ( VCCS ). Additional restrictions may apply depending upon other positions occupied within VCCS .

Brightpoint Community College is seeking qualified adjunct instructors for its course offerings at the Federal Correctional Complex ( FCC ) in Petersburg, VA. All classes are held in person during the day at FCC Petersburg.

Candidates should possess the requisite education and experience to teach one or more of the following subjects at the college level: Biology, Communication, English, History, Human Services, Mental Health, Math, Philosophy, Psychology, or Sociology. We may also have a need to teach Safety and Welding courses.

• Be available to attend a mandatory four-hour in-person training session at FCC Petersburg. This training will prepare faculty for teaching in a prison environment and will also permit year-long approval to enter each facility for the express purpose of teaching incarcerated students. This training and approval will need to be renewed annually.
• Be willing to follow all prison policies, restrictions and safety protocols.
• Be available to teach weekdays between the hours of 7:30 am and 3:30 pm.
• Have their own transportation and be available to travel to Petersburg, VA.
• Have the ability to successfully complete a criminal background investigation, which may include: fingerprint checks, local agency checks, employment verification, verification of education, credit checks (relevant to employment).

Please note there may not be immediate needs for disciplines addressed in this posting; however, candidates should apply to ensure sufficient time for interviews, training, and both college and Federal background checks. The appropriate Program Head and/or Prison Education Coordinator will contact candidates as need arises.

For associate degree fields, minimum of a master’s degree in the discipline or master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate semester hours of coursework in the discipline.

For non-associate degree occupational fields, high school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the field or an associate’s degree with minimum of 4 years of experience in the field.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills required. Ability to provide paper-based instruction in alignment with facility limitations. Ability to design and deliver instruction to diverse adult learners, including those with varied academic backgrounds.

Prior teaching experience at the postsecondary level.
