Job summary

Aims Community College seeks an aviation instructor to teach a variety of aviation courses at the Windsor Campus, including 14 CFR Part 141‑approved curriculum. You will design course materials, mentor students, and contribute to departmental governance.

Expect duties spanning curriculum evaluation, professional development, and ongoing industry engagement. Travel may be required occasionally. Domestic travel could occur as part of governance activities and college initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Requires an associate degree or higher plus FAA certificates and flight hours.
  • Commercial Pilot Certificate or Airline Transport Pilot – ASEL is required.
  • CFI and CFII-type credentials and aviation instructor qualifications are required.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct aviation courses including 14 CFR part 141 approved curriculum.
  • Assist in program/curriculum evaluation and development.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Assist with textbook/resource material evaluation and selection.
  • Instruct and maintain records per FAA 14 CFR Part 141.
  • Design/update course syllabi to industry standards.
  • Mentor students on academic and career matters in aviation.
  • Serve on committees contributing to governance and policies.
  • Stay proficient through professional activities and conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Department Executive Director or Academic Dean.

Education

Associate of applied science degree or higher
BS/MS or higher
FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) Certificate
FAA Ground Instructor Certificate
Minimum 190 logged flight hours
Commercial Pilot Certificate or Airline Transport Pilot – ASEL
Certified Flight Instructor – Airplane
Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument Airplane
Multi‑Engine Instructor – Airplane
CTE Aviation credential (post-secondary)

The primary responsibilities are to instruct aviation‑based courses, which include 14 CFR part 141 approved curriculum. Additionally, participation in professional development, designing course materials to meet industry standards, and collaborating on departmental and college governance initiatives are integral to the role. Occasional travel may be required.

Work Hours
  • Must be available to teach day and/or evening classes at the Windsor Campus.
Job Duties
  • Instruct assignments which may include a variety of courses in aviation.
  • Assist in program/curriculum evaluation, articulation, revision and development.
  • Participate in on‑going professional development.
  • Assist with evaluation and selection of textbooks and other resource materials.
  • Instruct and maintain records in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration 14 CFR Part 141.
  • Design and update course syllabi and instructional materials to meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor and advise students on academic and career matters within the field of aviation.
  • Serve on departmental and college committees to contribute to institutional governance and academic policies.
  • Maintain proficiency and currency in the field through active involvement in professional organizations and attending conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Executive Director or Academic Dean.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate of applied science degree or higher (BS, MS, etc.) plus either FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) Certificate or FAA Ground Instructor Certificate plus a minimum of 190 logged flight hours.
  • Commercial Pilot Certificate or Airline Transport Pilot – ASEL
  • Certified Flight Instructor – Airplane
  • Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument Airplane
  • Multi‑Engine Instructor – Airplane
  • Shall hold or qualify for a post‑secondary vocational credential in Aviation issued by Aims Community College CTE Office.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Type rating in turbojet aircraft
  • FAA Part 141 experience
  • Simulator instructor experience.
  • High levels of computer skills.

Screening/Selection

Initial screening will be conducted by a committee based on completed application materials. Employees may be asked to participate in temporary assignments lasting less than 6 months. All positions require a criminal background check and may require industry specific screenings such as an MVR, physical and/or drug screen.

Wage Range

Based on course content, wages will range from $1,297.00 per credit to $3,753.00 per credit. In certain instances, due to low enrollment, faculty payment will be based on part‑time per credit pay and pro-rated on a 10% per student basis.
