Job summary

Saint Mary's College of California invites applications for an Adjunct Faculty position in the School of Science for the 2026 Fall term. The course General Chemistry I (Chem 110) will be taught in person on the Moraga campus Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 am to 9:05 am.

The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry, have undergraduate teaching experience, and be capable of online/hybrid instruction as needed.

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching general chemistry and engaging diverse student populations.

Responsibilities

  • Teach General Chemistry I (Chem 110) in person on the Moraga campus.
  • Hold regular office hours to support students outside class.
  • Prepare lectures, assessments, and ensure student learning outcomes.
  • Contribute to department instruction and service as needed.

Qualifications

General Chemistry I (Chem 110) covers the fundamental chemical principles and the chemistry of the more common elements and their compounds. The learning goals for the course are to build an understanding of fundamental principles of chemistry and their applications, develop general approaches to problem-solving which can be applied to a broad spectrum of problems, including proficiency in unit conversion and an understanding of the significance of numerical values, and to develop the student's critical thinking skills. Topics include basic structure of atoms and molecules, periodic properties, bonding, chemical reactivity and stoichiometry, properties of gases, and thermochemistry.

This course will be taught in person on the Moraga campus during the 2026 Fall term (August 31, 2026 - December 20, 2026) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 am - 9:05 am.

In addition to teaching, the instructor is expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of one hour per week) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom.

The successful candidate will hold an advanced degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field; and undergraduate teaching experience in any subfield of Chemistry. Candidates should have experience with online/hybrid instruction. Preference will be given to those who have previously taught the course, or CHEM 008 or CHEM 010.

This position requires all coursework to be performed in the state of California.

The salary range for this position is $9,929 - $13,744 (4 workload units)and is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here .
