Job summary

Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital seeks an Addictions Counselor to apply SBIRT techniques within the CPEP to identify and address substance use among patients. Qualified candidates will be credentialed as a CASAC in NYS or hold a Master’s in Social Work with at least one year of alcohol/substance abuse counseling experience; preferred experience in a medical setting.

Verification of credentials is required with the application.

Qualifications

• Credentialed as an alcoholism and substance abuse counselor (CASAC) within NYS or a Master’s in Social work.
• At least one year or more experience in Alcohol Substance Abuse Counseling.
• Preferred: Previous experience in a medical setting.

Responsibilities

• Screen Patients – identify patients who need further assessment or treatment for substance use disorders.
• Offer Brief Intervention – Single session or multiple sessions of motivational discussion within the time constraints and regulations of the emergency service (CPEP) area.
• Make Referrals to Treatment – Referral to specialized treatment is provided to patients/families identified as needing more extensive treatment than offered by the SBIRT program.
• Provide Consultation, Advice & Instruction – Offer guidance and feedback to faculty, staff and residents pertaining to SBIRT process, community resources and supports.
• Maintain Up-to-Date Knowledge – Participate in County meetings pertaining to addiction and actively report community resource information, new programs/services and the like to faculty, staff and others within the hospital serving interfacing with patients with addictions.
• Ensure Quality - Monitor that addiction measures are completed and tracked, i.e. CORE measures and OMH regulatory requirements.
