Job summary

Stony Brook Medicine is seeking an Addictions Counselor to apply SBIRT techniques within the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). You will screen patients, provide brief interventions, and refer to treatment services while coordinating with faculty and staff to ensure quality care.

The role requires CASAC or MSW with at least one year of substance abuse counseling experience; prior medical setting experience is preferred. Equal opportunity employer with comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Credentialed as an alcoholism and substance abuse counselor (CASAC) within NYS or a Master’s in Social work.
• At least one year or more experience in Alcohol Substance Abuse Counseling.
• Previous experience in a medical setting preferred.

Responsibilities

• Screen Patients — identify patients who need further assessment or treatment for substance use disorders.
• Offer Brief Intervention — single session or multiple sessions of motivational discussion within the time constraints and regulations of the emergency service (CPEP).
• Make Referrals to Treatment — referral to specialized treatment for patients/families identified as needing more extensive treatment.
• Provide Consultation, Advice & Instruction — guidance and feedback to faculty, staff and residents pertaining to SBIRT process and resources.
• Maintain Up-to-Date Knowledge — participate in county meetings pertaining to addiction and report community resources and services.
• Ensure Quality — monitor addiction measures completed and tracked (CORE measures and OMH requirements).
