Job summary

Birch Agency is seeking an Adaptive Physical Education Teacher in Detroit, MI to support students with disabilities in developing motor, fitness, recreation, and sports skills. The role emphasizes individualized instruction, collaboration, and advocacy to promote inclusion and lifelong wellness.

The position requires a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate and SP Endorsement, along with knowledge of adapted PE practices.

Qualifications

• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate required.
• Special Education (SP) Endorsement required.
• Knowledge of adapted physical education practices.
• Experience with diverse physical, cognitive, and developmental needs preferred.
• Strong communication, collaboration and organizational skills.
• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, students, and families.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized adapted physical education instruction and services per IEPs.
• Assess motor competency, fitness, recreation, and sports skills.
• Develop and implement individualized PE goals and plans.
• Collaborate with teachers, service providers, administrators and families.
• Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to evaluations and progress monitoring.
• Adapt activities and environments to ensure access and participation.
• Maintain documentation and progress reports.
• Promote inclusive participation in PE programs and extracurricular activities.
• Coordinate and support Special Olympics participation when assigned.
• Foster a safe, positive learning environment.

Pay Rate: $30.00/hr

As an Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher, you will support students with disabilities in developing the motor, fitness, recreation, leisure, and sports skills needed for success in school and beyond. Through individualized instruction, assessment, collaboration, and advocacy, you will help students achieve their physical education goals while promoting inclusion, independence, and lifelong wellness.

What You'll Do

• Provide individualized adapted physical education instruction and services for students with disabilities as outlined in their IEPs
• Assess motor competency, physical fitness, recreation, leisure, play, and sports skills
• Develop and implement individualized physical education goals and instructional plans
• Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student success
• Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to evaluations, goal development, and progress monitoring
• Adapt activities, equipment, and learning environments to ensure student access and participation
• Maintain accurate documentation, assessment records, and progress reports
• Promote inclusive participation opportunities in physical education programs and extracurricular activities
• Coordinate and support Special Olympics participation and related activities when assigned
• Foster a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment for all students

What You'll Need
