Job summary

Variety Child Learning Center, located in East Northport, is seeking a Physical Education Teacher to provide adapted physical education instruction to preschool and elementary-aged students with disabilities. The role requires a Master’s Degree in Physical Education and relevant certification.

Variety Child Learning Center (VCLC) is a 4410 not-for-profit agency providing quality educational and therapeutic services to young children with disabilities. We are actively recruiting candidates for the Physical Education Teacher position.

Essential Functions

• Provide adapted physical education instruction to preschool and elementary‑aged students with disabilities.
• Develop and implement engaging physical education activities that promote gross motor development, coordination, physical fitness, and overall wellness.
• Design instruction that is individualized and aligned with student IEP goals and developmental needs.
• Assess student progress and maintain documentation related to physical education programming and student outcomes.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists, administrators, and families to support students’ educational and developmental goals.
• Adapt activities, equipment, and instructional strategies to ensure meaningful participation for all students.
• Promote safe, structured, and inclusive environments that encourage physical activity, social interaction, and skill development.
• Participate in team meetings, professional development activities, and school‑wide initiatives as assigned.
• Support school programs and activities, including special events and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Physical Education or related field required.
• Current New York State Physical Education Certification required.
• Minimum of 12 semester hours in Adapted Physical Education required.
• Experience working with preschool and/or school‑aged children with disabilities preferred.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• Ability to develop and implement individualized physical education programming for students with diverse learning and developmental needs.

This job operates in a school environment. Activities usually take place in classrooms, hallways, the gymnasium, outside on the playground, or in special activity rooms. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, iPads, printers/fax/scanner, telephone, and shredder.

Physical Demands

This role may be physically demanding. The employee is required to be non‑sedentary. Must be able to stand, walk, run, sit, bend, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and move throughout the school environment. The employee may need to lift and/or assist an average preschool-aged child (35 pounds) and school‑aged child (50 pounds), as needed.
