Job summary

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey offers an Actuarial Internship at our Newark, NJ facility. The 11-week program provides hands-on experience in actuarial tasks, data analysis, and collaboration with the Actuary/Analytics team.

Ideal candidates are pursuing undergrad degrees in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or economics, with strong math/stats skills, Excel, and SQL/VBA knowledge. Hybrid schedule requires two in-office days per week.

Qualifications

• Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Economics
• A high degree of skill in mathematics and statistics
• Affinity for learning how to use and develop technical tools for data work
• Willingness to discover opportunities for leveraging data to deliver insights
• Intermediate or Advanced Excel skills
• Working knowledge of VBA or SQL
• Experience with SAS highly preferred
• Must have at least one actuarial exam completed
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

• Work with Actuary/Analytics team on tasks related to existing initiatives.
• Use data sets to map structures and identify correlations.
• Identify and acquire data sets to enhance relevance and accuracy.
• Perform actuarial tasks including reserve calculations, pricing analysis, experience studies, and financial projections.
• Provide technical and analytical support for the actuarial department.

About the Role

Are you seeking an Actuarial Internship in the healthcare industry that provides invaluable experience? If yes, then Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey has an exciting opportunity for you to join our Actuary Team as an Actuarial Intern in our Newark, NJ facility!

What You'll Do

Responsibilities:

• Working with other members of the Actuary/Analytics team to complete various tasks related to existing initiatives.
• Working with data sets to map structures and identify correlations between elements.
• Identifying and acquiring additional data sets which enhance the relevance and accuracy of existing data sets.
• Perform actuarial tasks which are of a mathematical and quantitative nature. Tasks will vary based on work assignment and may involve reserve calculations, pricing analysis, experience analysis and studies, financial projections, and other actuarial/financial calculations.
• Provide technical and analytical support for the actuarial department.
• The selected individual will perform work under general supervision and must be familiar with standard actuarial concepts, practices, and procedures.

What You Bring

Education/Experience:

• Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Economics
• A high degree of skill in mathematics and statistics
• Affinity for learning how to use as well as develop technical tools for working with data sets
• Willingness to discover new opportunities for leveraging data to deliver new business insights or improve key decision-making processes
• Intermediate or Advanced Excel skills
• Working knowledge of VBA or SQL
• Experience with SAS highly preferred
• Must have at least one actuarial exam completed
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with internal and external customers.

Location: Newark Office (Hybrid, 2 days/week in the office)

Schedule: 8am-5pm (9 hour work day with lunch)

Duration: 11 week program (June 7, 2027 – August 19, 2027)
