Job summary

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is seeking a mid level analyst to work in their Actuarial Department. The role involves supporting premium rate development, evaluating benefit changes, and conducting pricing studies. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and at least 2 years of relevant experience.

Strong analytical skills and proficiency in Microsoft Excel are required. Experience with SAS, SQL, or R is preferred. This position offers a competitive salary and generous benefits.

Job description

About the Role

This mid level analyst role sits within the Actuarial Department and supports premium rate development for the Individual and Small Group markets. The position is responsible for assisting with evaluating proposed benefit and cost sharing changes, conducting pricing studies, assessing the impact of state and federal legislative changes, performing Mental Health Parity compliance reviews, and supporting additional actuarial functions as needed. The role applies mathematical modeling techniques and statistical concepts to assess risk and support sound actuarial decision making.

What You'll Do
  • Assist in developing premium rates for Individual and Small Group business.
  • Support the preparation and submission of premium rate filings to state and federal regulators.
  • Evaluate proposed benefit and cost‑sharing changes. Conduct pricing analyses and studies for Individual and Small Group segments.
  • Assess the impact of proposed state and federal legislative changes.
  • Perform Mental Health Parity compliance assessments.
  • Provide support on additional actuarial projects as requested.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and evaluate input received from cross‑departmental partners.
  • Prepare and present reports with clear explanations and insights for managers and directors.
  • Conduct experience studies and drill‑down analyses to identify key cost drivers and trends.
  • Complete ad‑hoc modeling and analytical projects.
What You Bring
Education/Experience
  • Requires a Bachelors degree, preferably within Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Requires 2+ years of actuarial and/or statistics experience.
Additional licensing, certifications, registrations
  • Working towards an ASA highly preferred.
Knowledge
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required.
  • Experience with SAS, SQL, R, or similar programming languages preferred.
  • Working knowledge of data analysis and actuarial principles preferred.
Skills and Abilities

Salary Range

$79,100 - $105,945

This compensation range is specific to the job level and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. This range has been created in good faith based on information known to Horizon at the time of posting. Compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case.
