Job Description

The Director, Actuary - Valuation and Reporting leads actuarial valuation, financial reporting, reserve analysis, and related regulatory support for health plan products and lines of business. This role is accountable for the design, execution, review, and communication of actuarial analyses that support statutory and management reporting, financial planning, rate and risk evaluation, regulatory filings, and executive decision making. The position provides actuarial leadership across complex valuation and reporting processes, establishes appropriate controls and documentation, ensures work is performed in accordance with applicable Actuarial Standards of Practice, and develops a team of actuarial professionals through coaching, prioritization, technical direction, and cross-functional partnership.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, Finance, Business, or related field.
    • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) with ten years of relevant health plan, health insurance, valuation, financial reporting, pricing, reserving, or actuarial leadership experience, or Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) with fifteen years of relevant experience.
  • Licensure/ Registration/ Certification:
    • Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA)
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Demonstrated experience leading complex actuarial valuation, financial reporting, reserve development, trend, pricing, forecasting, or regulatory filing processes.
    • Experience translating actuarial results into actionable financial and business insights for senior leaders, finance partners, product leaders, compliance partners, and other non-technical audiences.
    • Experience managing, coaching, or directing actuarial analysts or cross-functional teams.
    • Advanced actuarial judgment and ability to apply Actuarial Standards of Practice to valuation, reporting, pricing, reserving, model development, documentation, and governance activities.
    • Excellent analytical, modeling, problem-solving, and project-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple major deliverables with recurring reporting deadlines.
    • Strong written, oral, and executive presentation skills, including the ability to simplify complex actuarial issues for non-technical audiences.
    • Strong computer and analytical tool skills, including Microsoft Excel and relevant actuarial, database, statistical, or reporting applications.
    • Ability to work independently, use sound professional judgment, identify emerging risks, and provide leadership across divisions and departments.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with Finance, Accounting, Underwriting, Government Programs, Compliance, Legal, Informatics, Data Operations, Product, Sales, and Operations teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination:
    • Master’s degree in Actuarial Science, Finance, Statistics, Business, Economics, Health Policy, Data Science or related field.
    • Experience with Medicare, Medicaid, Individual, Small Group, Large Group, self-insured, or other health insurance products.
    • Experience with statutory reporting, financial statement support, premium deficiency reserve analysis, IBNR/reserve development, risk adjustment, reinsurance, or provider reimbursement valuation.
  • Licensure/ Registration/ Certification:
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Experience leading process redesign, automation, reporting modernization, model governance, or data asset implementation supporting actuarial valuation and reporting.
    • Experience with advanced modeling techniques including the use of AI.
    • Working knowledge of health plan financial reporting, regulatory filing expectations, risk adjustment, provider contracting, government program economics, and commercial product financial dynamics.
    • Programming or data experience using SAS, SQL, Python, R, Access, Azure, cloud data sources, enterprise data platforms, or similar tools.
    • Experience with advanced data modeling, automation, AI-enabled reporting workflows, or analytics modernization.
Essential Duties
  • (30%) - Lead actuarial valuation and reporting processes, including reserve development, financial reporting support, management reporting, regulatory support, and actuarial analyses that inform business decisions. Ensure timely, accurate, well-documented deliverables that align with applicable Actuarial Standards of Practice.
  • (20%) - Design, enhance, and govern actuarial models, assumptions, controls, reconciliations, documentation, and review processes used for valuation, reporting, pricing support, trend analysis, forecasting, and risk evaluation.
  • (20%) - Lead and develop actuarial staff. Set priorities, allocate work, provide technical review, coach actuarial judgment, support exam and professional development, and build a high-performing team culture.
  • (15%) - Provide actuarial certification, analysis, and subject matter expertise for regulatory filings, statutory and management reporting requests, audits, financial planning, and other governance activities as appropriate.
  • (10%) - Partner with Finance, Accounting, Underwriting, Government Programs, Compliance, Legal, Informatics, Data Operations, Product, Sales, and Operations to explain valuation results, identify financial risks and opportunities, and support enterprise initiatives.
  • (5%) - Perform other duties as assigned to accomplish departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
Leadership Responsibility

This role directs and coordinates valuation and reporting work within Actuarial & Underwriting. The role may directly manage actuaries, actuarial analysts, data analysts, or project resources and coordinates work across Finance, Accounting, Government Programs, Underwriting, Compliance, Legal, Informatics, Data Operations, Product, Sales, and Operations. The position is accountable for technical direction, staff development, prioritization of recurring and ad-hoc deliverables, documentation standards, process controls, and leadership of major process, reporting, valuation, and technology improvement efforts.
