Job summary

Markel is seeking a Sr. Actuarial Manager to lead actuarial strategy and analysis for the Workers’ Compensation segment. You will partner with senior leadership, Underwriting, Claims and Finance to drive profitable growth and informed decision-making.

You will oversee pricing, profitability monitoring, and portfolio analytics, delivering actionable insights to support underwriting strategy and capital allocation. Strong communication to both technical and non‑technical audiences is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, economics or related field.
• ACAS required; FCAS preferred.
• 8–10 years actuarial experience, with strong Workers’ Compensation focus.
• Proven leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience partnering with Underwriting, Claims and Finance to influence strategy.

Responsibilities

• Lead actuarial analyses for Workers’ Compensation aligned with profitability and growth.
• Develop pricing analyses, rate indications, and portfolio monitoring tools.
• Collaborate with Underwriting, Claims, Finance and executives to identify risks and opportunities.
• Monitor portfolio results, loss trends and underwriting performance; provide recommendations.
• Evaluate claim trends and drivers with Claims leadership.
• Support business planning, forecasting and reinsurance evaluations.
• Present analyses clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Translate actuarial concepts into practical business considerations.
• Mentor actuarial staff and drive technical excellence across the function.
• Represent Actuarial in enterprise and segment initiatives.
