Location: Remote – United States
Employment: Long-Term Consulting Engagement
Industry: Property & Casualty Insurance
Specialty: Workers' Compensation & Commercial Lines Reserving
GSD Search is partnering with an established Property & Casualty insurance organization seeking a seasoned Senior Actuarial Manager to lead its reserving function, oversee actuarial analysts, and serve as a key technical resource to executive leadership.
This is a senior-level opportunity combining hands‑on actuarial reserving, team leadership, and oversight of relationships with external actuarial consulting firms and auditors.
The ideal candidate brings extensive Workers' Compensation reserving experience, additional commercial P&C exposure, and the ability to independently evaluate reserve adequacy, challenge actuarial assumptions, and communicate recommendations to financial leadership.
Lead and oversee the actuarial reserving function, including managing and mentoring actuarial analysts and coordinating reserving activities across multiple insurance programs.
Personally perform complex loss reserving analyses, including loss development triangles, development factor selections, ultimate loss estimates, and IBNR calculations.
Oversee quarterly reserve reviews and evaluate reserve adequacy across Workers' Compensation, Commercial Auto, General Liability, and other P&C lines.
Independently select and apply appropriate reserving methodologies, including Chain Ladder, Bornhuetter-Ferguson, and other actuarial approaches.
Serve as a primary technical resource when working with external actuarial consulting firms, reviewing independent reserve analyses and challenging assumptions or conclusions when appropriate.
Support annual financial audits and work directly with external auditors to explain reserving methodologies, assumptions, and actuarial conclusions.
Review and reconcile internal and external actuarial reserve estimates to support management's reserve decisions.
Present reserve findings, trends, risks, and recommendations to the CFO and other senior leadership.
Provide technical guidance and quality oversight to less experienced actuarial staff while remaining directly involved in complex reserving work.
Support actuarial documentation, regulatory requirements, and applicable state or bureau filings.
Significant hands‑on Property & Casualty actuarial reserving experience, including direct, recent Workers' Compensation loss reserving experience.
Experience with additional commercial P&C lines, preferably Commercial Auto, General Liability, or Private Passenger Auto.
Prior experience managing, mentoring, or directly supervising actuarial professionals.
Demonstrated experience interacting with outside actuarial consulting firms and external financial auditors.
Strong technical knowledge of loss development methodologies, IBNR, ultimate loss projections, reserve adequacy, and actuarial assumptions.
Experience personally developing and performing reserving calculations rather than exclusively reviewing or overseeing the work of others.
Ability to independently challenge actuarial conclusions and communicate recommendations to executive leadership.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage technical discussions involving internal stakeholders, outside actuaries, and auditors.
Ability to operate independently in a lean actuarial environment with limited day‑to‑day technical oversight.
ACAS or FCAS designation, or meaningful progress through actuarial examinations.
Experience leading reserving functions within a P&C insurance carrier.
Experience with multiple insurance programs, including complex or long-tail exposures.
Familiarity with statutory actuarial reporting, Statements of Actuarial Opinion, and state regulatory filing requirements.
Experience working directly with CFOs, senior financial leadership, and external actuarial firms.
Strong analytical and actuarial modeling capabilities.
This is not a purely managerial or oversight position. The successful candidate will be expected to personally perform reserving analyses for more complex insurance programs while directing the work of other actuarial professionals.
The organization utilizes an external actuarial firm to sign its Statement of Actuarial Opinion. This position will work closely with that firm but will not be responsible for signing the annual opinion.
