Job summary

CAMBA, based in Brooklyn, seeks an Activity Specialist/ Youth Facilitator II for the DYCD-funded after-school program at PS 212. You will create and lead engaging activities across K-12, ensure safe, inclusive learning, and support youth through positive development.

You will plan lessons, coordinate with school staff, manage supplies, track attendance, and help organize showcases and exhibitions. This temp/part-time role requires a high school diploma and preference for bilingual candidates.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Experience teaching in a specific activity area such as art, dance, nutrition, organized sports, etc. is preferred.
• Bi-lingual in English and Spanish or Chinese is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety and security of program participants following CAMBA protocols.
• Create and lead weekly activities and plan culminating events.
• Collaborate with staff and partners to plan showcases and performances.
• Plan, prepare, and lead instructional sessions for diverse age groups.
• Develop written lesson plans, scope and sequence documents, and project-based learning curric ulum.

• Review program guidelines and support students in following them.
• Coordinate curriculum with school personnel as appropriate.

The CAMBA After-School Program at PS 212

is funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and other funders, to serve approximately 148 children and youth in grades K-5. Children participate in program activities (such as homework help, conflict resolution, academic enrichment, recreation and creative arts programming) during after school hours and thirteen school holidays.

What Does a Activity Specialist/ Youth Facilitator II Do:

• Ensure the safety and security of each program participant by following all CAMBA after-school protocols and procedures including but not limited to procedures and protocols regarding safety, supervision, accident and incident reporting.
• Create and lead weekly activities and plan a culminating event in area of specialization, as listed on the program schedule.
• Collaborate with after-school program staff, Program Director and Program Partners to plan and implement Club Showcases, holiday performances and other program wide events.
• Plan, prepare, and lead culminating events, showcases, exhibitions, screenings, or performances that highlight participant work at the close of each instructional cycle.
• Apply positive youth development principles and effective group facilitation techniques to manage classroom behavior, establish group norms, and maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment.
• Review and post program schedule in the classroom daily.
• Plan and facilitate engaging, age-appropriate instructional sessions for elementary, middle school, and high school participants in the Instructor’s area of expertise, which may include arts, media, content creation, or photography, and differentiate instruction to meet the developmental needs, skill levels, and interests of participants.
• Develop written lesson plans, scope and sequence documents, and project-based learning curriculum for each instructional cycle, and submit them to site leadership in advance of implementation.
• Take and submit accurate attendance for all instructional sessions, and communicate participation and engagement concerns to site leadership.
• Identify, request, and manage supplies, materials, and equipment needed for instruction, and maintain program equipment in good working order.
• Review and post program guidelines in the classroom and support students in following the guidelines.
• Actively supervise students in the hallways, bathrooms and classrooms to ensure a safe environment.
• Research new materials and methods of instruction to keep curriculum current and relevant.
• Coordinate curriculum and daily activities with school personnel, as appropriate.
• Assess participants’ strengths in order to build upon them.
• Prepare and distribute instructional materials for classroom use.
• Provide individual and group instruction/facilitation on the subject(s) of the course.
  • Attend weekly staff PD and holiday PD days. In addition, completion of monthly self-paced trainings
• Manage classrooms and/or small groups effectively to maximize client learning.
• Participate in administrative and staff meetings as requested.
• Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports.
• Review all homework assignments.
• May administer and grade appropriate pre-and-post testing.
• Tasks may be modified, expanded and/or assigned overt a period of time.

Education, Licenses and/or Certifications Required:

• High School Diploma or GED.

Minimum Experiences and Skills Required:

• Experience in a specific activity area such as art, dance, nutrition, organized sports, etc. Preferably, Activity Specialists will be professionals who are already experts within their field or college or graduate students working towards such specialization. In addition to a solid grounding in relevant content area, teaching skills to successfully implement the relevant program component are recommended.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Preferably Bi-lingual in English and Spanish or Chinese.

Pre and/or Post Employment Requirements:

• New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Sex Offender Registry (SOR) clearance
• New York State Central Register (SCR) clearance for child abuse and maltreatment
• New York State Staff Exclusion List (SEL) clearance
• New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) clearance, as applicable
• Criminal background check and fingerprinting, as required
• completion of the required health and safety trainings listed below within the first week of employment:
  • Foundations in Health and Safety (5 hours)
  • Building on Foundations in Health and Safety (5 hours)
  • Identifying and Responding to Anaphylaxis: Elijah’s Law (1.5 hours)
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Trauma-Informed Practice (45 minutes)
  • Mandated Reporter Training (2 hours)
  • Continued eligibility and maintenance of all required clearances throughout employment. Failure to maintain required clearances may result in removal from duties involving children and/or further employment action.
• Complete a one-hour training, provided by DYCD, on the following topics:
  • Mental health and mental illness
  • Engagement and de-escalation strategies
  • Referral and crisis management protocols
  • Mental health resources
