JOB SUMMARY:

Assists the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator in implementing individual and group activities to meet the psychosocial needs of each resident.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Treats all information about residents, their conditions, and families as confidential.
2. Follows established corporate and departmental policies, standards, and practices.
3. Helps develop, coordinate, and assist with resident programs and activities.
4. Develops and guides Reality Orientation activities (daily announcements, current events, large calendars, visual aids, seasonal decorations, etc.).
5. Schedules regular use of the community van for scenic drives, shopping trips, transportation to events, etc.
6. Assists in assigning volunteers to specific activity responsibilities, ensuring they have adequate materials and supervision.
7. Participates in resident care planning when relevant.
8. Facilitates special functions from outside groups and activities during weekends and evenings.
9. Documents attendance and reports observed changes in residents’ physical and emotional status to the licensed nurse.
10. Performs other duties as directed by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ability to read, write, and understand English well.
2. Compassion, understanding, and empathy for older adults.
3. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
4. Effective communication skills with residents.
5. Enjoys encouraging and motivating older persons.
6. Creativity, resourcefulness, and imagination in planning activities.
7. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
8. Valid driver’s license and ability to drive the community van.
9. Experience working with the elderly is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to work on your feet during an 8-hour shift, assist with transfers or repositioning, react quickly in emergencies, and frequently push residents in wheelchairs throughout the shift. Ability to drive the company van is required.
