WHO YOU ARE:

A detail-oriented professional with accounting and or collections experience who is comfortable dealing with employers, claimants, and attorneys in discussing sensitive debt issues. You are competent and are proficient at reviewing data to verify its accuracy, ensuring that it is compliant with rules and regulations, and you can provide guidance to your customers on the rules and regulations you enforce. Flexibility is also a plus as work assignments may change from day to day, depending on items received from upstream departments. Working with a team and accepting responsibility for how your work affects others is essential in this team environment.

Experience interpreting and composing basic business and legal documents preferred. College level computer, math, and business-related courses preferred. Ability to problem solve, organize and prioritize a workload with multiple tasks and deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interaction with employers, claimants, accountants, attorneys, and others preferred. Spanish-speaking a plus. Skilled in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, mainframe systems, and Internet research is preferred. A Microsoft Excel and writing test will be administered at time of interview.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

The Wage and Hour Accounts Examiner (Accounts Examiner I - III) performs entry-level to moderately complex account examination work in the Wage and Hour Collections Unit of the Finance Division. Examines TWC and other employer records to secure collection of past-due wages. Administers the provisions of the Texas Payday Law, Chapter 61 of the Labor Code, which includes issuance of past-due notices, liens, freezes/levies and other enforcement actions. Work involves attention to detail while responding to a heavy workload of telephone calls, electronic mail, letters and data input. May assist with training of coworkers. Telephone and written customer service experience is preferred to explain rules, regulations, and resolve issues.

YOU WILL BE TRUSTED TO:
  • Examine Wage and Hour records to secure collection of past-due wages.
  • Review Payday and other applicable databases to verify delinquency and employer identity before taking action. May take any of the following actions to collect past-due amounts: issue Demand for Payment Notices, file liens and document recording data, issue bank freezes/levies, place warrant holds with Comptroller and other enforcement actions.
  • Respond to a heavy workload of telephone calls, electronic mail, and letters from claimants and employers or their representatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
YOU QUALIFY WITH:
  • Accounts Examiner I: One year of full-time experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work.
  • Accounts Examiner II: Two years of full-time experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work.
  • Accounts Examiner III: Three years of full-time experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work.
  • All Levels: Relevant academic credits may be applied toward experience qualifications for this position.
YOU ARE A GREAT FIT WITH:
  • Successful completion of 30-90 semester hours of accredited college work, which included at least 6 semester hours of accounting, mathematics, business administration, or related courses.
  • This position may often deal with irate customers over the telephone. A minimum of six months in collection experience is preferred.
  • Great telephone and business writing skills.
  • Well-organized and able to shift from one duty to another based on daily workload.
  • One to two years of debt collection experience.
  • Working knowledge and experience with MS Office, Outlook, Excel, and SharePoint.
  • Experience with TWC’s automated system or the Comptrollers TINS/USAS system.

Due to the data security in this department, an additional federal background check including fingerprinting will be required of the person selected for this position. The person in this position will be required to work a Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM schedule.
