Job summary

The University of Minnesota is seeking a functional supervisor for Accounting professionals in the Finance Operations Center. This hybrid role supervises journals and payroll accounting, guides staff, and Liaises with Resource Responsibility Centers in an assigned portfolio.

The position emphasizes collaboration with the Accounting Manager, ensuring service levels are met, and fostering an inclusive work environment. A BA/BS with 4+ years of experience is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus at least four years of experience, or combined education/experience to equal eight years.
  • Experience supervising accounting professionals.
  • Familiar with payroll accounting and journal entries.

Responsibilities

About the Job

Position Overview: This position serves as a functional supervisor for assignedAccounting professionals in the Finance Operations Center. Theywill supervise and assign work, provide guidance and direction formoderately complex financial and technical issues, and serve as theprimary liaison to supported Resource Responsibility Centers (RRCs)in their assigned portfolio.

Work environment: Hybrid (minimum three days in the office)

Anticipated start date: October 5, 2026

Job Responsibilities with % of time:
Supervising (60%)
  • Directly supervises accounting professionals responsible forthe journal entry and payroll accounting functions of theUniversity.
  • Provides recommendations for employment matters related tohiring, coaching, development, dismissal, promotion, and stafftraining.
  • Assists with building administrative materials in support ofaccounting activities (for example, roles & responsibilities,key tasks) and aligns staff to the accomplishment of plans andgoals.
  • Collaborates with the Accounting Manager to ensure servicelevel expectations are monitored and met.
  • Cultivates a collaborative community to build a sense ofbelonging for all. Provides service with an equitable and inclusivelens.
Accounting (20%)
  • Uses information and requests received from a portfolio of RRCsto analyze and prepare chart field requests into PeopleSoftFinancials (also known as the Enterprise Financial] System, orEFS), prepares journal entry analysis and computation and completesthe entry of journal entries into EFS. Requests will be processedfollowing University standard practices and procedures in journalentries, ledger/fund analyses, journal corrections, year-endactivities, journal uploads, as well as independent review andresearch of complex transactional support to ensure accuratereporting.
  • Collaborates with finance staff at RRCs on accounting periodclosings, reviewing reports and other materials to ensurereasonableness and identifying and resolving errors of a complexnature.
  • Facilitates standard and non-standard capital assettransactions, including fabrications and assets purchased andcollaborates with Accounting Services to ensure accurate accountcode use.
  • Explains, interprets, and applies University accountingpolicies and procedures.
  • Uses the chart of accounts with expertise and understanding,ensures ChartField string integrity by working with otheraccounting professionals to recommend updates and accurateuses.
  • Identifies data needs to accomplish goals and initiatives,compiles data and reports as needed, and reviews reports compiledby others for accuracy. May require the use of compilinginformation from multiple reporting resources.
  • Understands key accounting functions, Generally AcceptedAccounting principles, and other guiding concepts with developingexpertise. May require analysis of applicability to complextransactions.
  • Processes payroll accounting transactions initiated by HRrequests such as new hire, additional pay, etc. or funding changesinitiated by a finance request (enters payroll distributionChartField strings, verifies funding, validates additional payentry, processes retroactive adjustments, etc.)
  • Proactively analyzes and tracks payroll activity to completepayroll distributions and process changes based on communicationwith departments, understanding of funding sources and upcomingchanges.
  • Collaborate closely with unit contacts (including financestaff, as well as academic and research staff) to process retropayroll distributions.
Professional Development (10%)
  • Supplies knowledge for training manuals and procedures for theFinance Operations Center.
  • Completes professional development, learning and development,education, and training activities appropriate to work duties andfor the pursuit of individual, unit, and institutionalsuccess.
  • Participates in staff development based on individual needincluding ongoing skills training, DEI development, professionallearning, service & scholarly activity, and engagement &well-being.
  • Supports direct reports as needed in professional developmentand models dedication to crafting an inclusive work environment andencouraging a caring culture.
Unit Support (5%)
  • Serves as primary liaison for Chief Financial Manager (CFM),business partners, and units contained within supported RRCs foraccounting and payroll accounting activity.
Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree plus at least four years of experience or acombination of related education and work experience to equal eightyears.
Preferred Qualifications (please document on resume):
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials
  • Knowledge and understanding of University of Minnesotafinancial policies
  • Ability to use data to make comparisons, perform verificationand reconciliations, and compile reports
  • Proven expertise in accounting
  • 2 years supervisory experience
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $80,489.97 - $88,845.33 per year; depending oneducation/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
