POSITION SUMMARY:

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated Accounting Manager - Treasury & Insurance to join its Global Accounting organization. This role will lead the monthly close, accounting, and financial reporting activities for treasury and insurance related areas, including hedge accounting, foreign exchange, investments, debt, and captive insurance arrangements.

The role is highly cross-functional and transformation-oriented, partnering closely with Treasury, Insurance, Technical Accounting, FP&A, Tax, and external auditors to maintain a strong control environment, ensure U.S. GAAP compliance, and enhance process efficiency through systems and automation (e.g., Kyriba, BlackLine, Oracle).

The ideal candidate brings strong accounting judgment, a continuous improvement mindset, and the ability to translate complex activity into clear, well-documented accounting conclusions and disclosures.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Treasury Accounting

  • Own treasury accounting activities and month-end close deliverables for hedge accounting, foreign exchange, investments, and debt, ensuring accurate journal entries and U.S. GAAP-compliant financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Treasury team on controllership activities to support cash forecasting and provide insights into cash flow, liquidity, and financial performance.
  • Partner with the Technical Accounting team to ensure adherence to investment and hedging policies, conduct hedge effectiveness testing, support disclosure and reporting requirements, and prepare audit-ready documentation for complex treasury transactions.
  • Act as the primary accounting stakeholder in the development, implementation, and optimization of Vertex's Treasury Management System, with a focus on enhancing the functionality of Kyriba's Cash Accounting and Financial Accounting modules.

Insurance Accounting

  • Own accounting and close activities for captive insurance arrangements, including coordination with the outsourced service provider, ensuring accurate and timely accounting activities in compliance with insurance accounting principles.
  • Work closely with the Insurance team to understand operational goals and provide guidance on accounting treatments, risks, and opportunities.
  • Partner with the Technical Accounting team on accounting considerations and disclosures for insurance-related matters under U.S. GAAP and ASC 944.

Core Accounting

  • Prepare and/or review account reconciliations for treasury and insurance accounts and deliver clear fluctuation analysis and business explanations to support accurate financial reporting.
  • Oversee SOX compliance for treasury and insurance processes, address control gaps, and maintain audit-ready documentation for internal and external audit requests.
  • Lead initiatives to automate and standardize treasury and insurance accounting processes, identifying and prioritizing opportunities for continuous improvement to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and control.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATION

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Typically requires 5+ years of relevant experience of progressive experience in corporate accounting and/or public accounting, including exposure to treasury accounting and hedge accounting; experience with captive insurance accounting is a plus.
  • CPA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent treasury certifications are highly preferred.
  • Experience in the life sciences industry or with a Big 4 accounting firm is preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles (e.g., IFRS, U.S. GAAP), treasury accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of FX markets and balance sheet and cash flow hedging.
  • Familiarity with treasury systems such as Kyriba, Chatham, or Clearwater.
  • Experience with EBS environments (Oracle or SAP) and/or Blackline.
  • Self-starter with a hands-on work style, strong work ethic, and a proactive approach.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities, capable of meeting tight deadlines.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams.
