Job summary

1199SEIU National Benefit Fund is seeking an experienced accounting professional to manage general ledgers for assigned Funds and oversee the monthly, quarterly and year-end close processes. The role requires strong GAAP knowledge, grants management experience, and supervisory capabilities to guide accounting staff.

You will prepare financial statements, assist with regulatory reporting, and collaborate with other finance leaders to drive process improvements while ensuring accuracy and timely

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required; MBA preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years of accounting experience with strong knowledge of GAAP; includes three years in grants management or related field, with at least two years of supervisory experience.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; knowledge of financial systems and Oracle preferred.
  • Experience with non-profit and Taft-Hartley Plan accounting principles and procedures.
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical capabilities; strong organizational skills and ability to maintain detailed records.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize workflow to meet deadlines, and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively manage, motivate, and supervise

Responsibilities

  • Maintain ledgers for assigned Funds.
  • Understand financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Ensure timely monthly reporting (trial balance, reconciliations, audit schedules).
  • Prepare reports for internal and external auditors.
  • Coordinate monthly, quarterly and year-end closings and allocate expenses.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual financial statements and assist with regulatory reporting.
  • Research GAAP compliance.
  • Supervise accounting staff and monitor performance.
  • Set goals with direct reports and guide development.
  • Collaborate with finance managers to meet department goals.
  • Support management with projects and process improvements.
  • Handle staff personnel issues.
  • Advise on non-routine reporting transactions.
  • Manage department resources and budget; suggest cost-effective methods.
  • Assist with fiscal grant management and budgeting.
  • Analyze monthly grant activity and liaise with FALC and other departments to ensure grants are properly managed.
  • Assist in review and preparation of CHAR500, Directive 12, Form 5500, and Form 990 filings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the general ledgers of assigned Funds
  • Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure
  • Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information (trial balance, bank reconciliations, various monthly reconciliations, audit schedules, etc.)
  • Prepare reports and supporting documents for internal and external auditors
  • Perform and coordinate timely monthly, quarterly and year end closings and ensure proper allocation of expenses to all Funds
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements; assisting with regulatory reporting as applicable
  • Researching accounting issues for compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Supervise, train and monitor the performance of accounting staff; ensure duties are properly performed and employees are working toward common Fund goals
  • Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advice on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff
  • Collaborates with the other finance department managers to support overall department goals and objectives
  • Support Management with special projects and workflow process improvements
  • Handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions
  • Manage department resources and budget effectively; make recommendations to management for cost effective methods of accomplishing accounting functions
  • Assist with fiscal grant management and budgeting
  • Analyzes monthly grant activity, monitors grant spending reports and expenditures posted to assigned grant projects, and serves as liaison to FALC and other collaborating departments to ensure grants are being properly managed
  • Assist in the review and preparation of the annual CHAR500, Directive 12, Form 5500, and Form 990 filings
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned by management
