Job DescriptionJob Description

Accounting Manager / Controller – Construction

We are a family-owned construction company specializing in high-quality residential remodels, custom homes, and commercial construction. Small by design, we have built our reputation around exceptional craftsmanship, deep construction expertise, and long-term relationships with clients, trade partners, and its team. With more than 150 years of combined construction experience, the company approaches each project with a commitment to integrity, transparency, kindness, and collaboration—summed up simply in its philosophy: “Be Nice, AND Do Good Work.” Sloan combines the professionalism and expertise clients expect from an experienced contractor with the personal, approachable culture of a close-knit family business.

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager/Controller.

The Accounting Manager/Controller is a senior financial leader responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of the company’s financial information and accounting operations. This role owns the financials from end to end, overseeing accounting processes and the accounting team, finalizing financial statements, maintaining strong internal controls, and leading compliance efforts. The Accounting Manager/Controller is expected to bring deep technical accounting expertise and sound judgment to complex areas such as revenue recognition, consolidation, benefits and payroll accounting, and GAAP reporting, while also taking an active role in budgeting and forecasting. Beyond producing accurate numbers, this position must understand what those numbers mean, identify issues before they become problems, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and continually improve the people, processes, and systems that support the business.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the full accounting function and take ownership of the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of Sloan’s financial records and reporting.
  • Manage and oversee the outsourced accounting team responsible for transactional accounting functions, including AP, AR, payroll accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, fixed assets, and other transactional accounting activities.
  • Review outsourced accounting work for accuracy, completeness, appropriate supporting documentation, and compliance with company policies and GAAP; provide direction, feedback, and resolution of more complex accounting matters.
  • Own and manage the month-end and year-end close processes, establishing timelines, reviewing work, resolving discrepancies, and ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare, review, and finalize financial statements and related management reporting, ensuring the underlying accounting appropriately reflects the business.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and documentation to safeguard company assets and ensure reliable financial reporting.
  • Identify errors, unusual activity, and accounting issues, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and determine the proper accounting treatment and corrective action.
  • Oversee complex accounting matters, including revenue recognition, consolidations, complex payroll and benefits accounting, accruals, estimates, and other technical accounting areas as applicable.
  • Lead annual insurance audit and compliance activities, serving as the primary accounting contact for external auditors and coordinating schedules, documentation, and responses.
  • Lead the budgeting and forecasting process, working with company leadership to develop financial expectations, monitor performance, and understand significant variances.
  • Develop and improve accounting processes and systems, identifying opportunities to increase efficiency, accuracy, scalability, and visibility across the organization.
  • Serve as the primary internal financial accounting resource for leadership, translating financial results into clear, useful information and providing sound accounting judgment when business decisions have financial implications.
  • Establish accountability across internal and outsourced resources, ensuring responsibilities are clearly defined, deadlines are met, issues are escalated appropriately, and the accounting function operates as one cohesive team.
  • Partner with company leadership and external advisors on financial reporting, compliance, tax, and other matters requiring Controller-level expertise and judgment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
  • Five (5) Years of accounting experience, preferably with a small construction company.
  • QuickBooks Online experience is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting concepts, including cost accounting and WIP.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage client communication.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Excel and Google applications.
  • CPA designation
  • Experience with builder-specific project management software, such as Ressio, Builder. Trend, and Job Tread.
  • Proficiency with iSolved Payroll software.
