Role Overview
We are seeking a hands‑on, detail‑oriented Accounting Manager to oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations for two premier professional sports entities inPickleball.
In this seat, you will lead and mentor a 4-person accounting team while serving as the operational finance lead across complex, event‑driven, and sponsorship‑heavy revenue streams. Reporting to senior finance leadership, you will oversee month‑end/year‑end close processes, ensure ASC 606 revenue recognition compliance across sponsorship contracts, manage player expense accruals, oversee sales tax compliance on ticketing/registrations, and lead financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Accounting Operations, Financial Close & Entity Oversight
- General Ledger & Month-End Close: Manage daily AP, AR, and GL activities for PPA Tour and MLP—ensuring accurate, timely monthly, quarterly, and year‑end closes.
- Review & Accruals: Review journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial schedules; oversee player‑related expense accruals, prize money disbursements, and event accounting.
- Subsidiary & Entity Oversight: Direct accounting operations, tracking certification fees, testing costs, and operational expenses.
2. Sponsorship & Event Revenue Accounting (ASC 606)
- ASC 606 Revenue Recognition: Manage complex sponsorship agreement accounting under ASC 606—overseeing milestone performance obligations, customer billing schedules, and collections.
- Commissions & Partnerships: Calculate and process internal/external sales commission payouts, working closely with commercial teams to ensure accurate contract setups.
3. Leadership & Team Management
- Direct Team Supervision: Manage, mentor, and develop a 4-person accounting staff—providing continuous feedback, workload distribution, and professional development.
- Culture of Accountability: Foster a collaborative, high‑performance environment focused on meeting tight reporting deadlines as the organization expands.
4. Audit, Tax & Process Improvement
- External Audit Leadership: Lead annual external financial statement audits as the primary point of contact for external auditors.
- Tax Compliance: Coordinate corporate tax filings with external advisors and manage sales tax compliance for ticket sales and player registration fees.
- System Automation: Identify process bottlenecks, document internal controls/SOPs, and implement financial software enhancements to scale accounting operations.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education & Credentials: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred).
- Professional Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including direct people management (supervising accounting staff/teams).
- U.S. GAAP & Revenue Recognition: Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP, specifically technical revenue recognition rules (ASC 606) applied to complex contracts.
- Multi-Entity & Audit Management: Proven track record managing multi‑entity financial closes, leading external audits, and managing multi‑state sales tax compliance.
- Leadership & Communication: Strong leadership skills, high analytical capability, and clear executive communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Industry experience in sports, live events, entertainment, media, or hospitality.
- Hands‑on experience with sports sponsorship accounting, player prize money administration, or ticket sales tax processes.
Success Metrics (KPIs)
- Financial Close Velocity: Delivering accurate, audit‑ready monthly and quarterly close packages within scheduled deadlines.
- ASC 606 Revenue Compliance: Flawless tracking and revenue recognition scheduling across all active PPA Tour and MLP sponsorship agreements.
- Audit Execution: Leading clean, unadjusted annual financial statement audits with zero material weaknesses or control deficiencies.
- Team Development: Driving performance improvement and professional growth across the 4‑person accounting team.
