Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible non-profit accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and general accounting principles.
  • Experience with nonprofit fund accounting, restricted funds, and grant tracking.
  • Experience with organizational budgeting.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close with Director of Finance and external partners.
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial records for accuracy.
  • Monitor grants and fund accounting; ensure proper coding by grant, fund, and program.
  • Oversee external bookkeeping and ensure timely deliverables.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and budget analyses.
  • Support audits, Form 990, 1099 reporting, and compliance filings.
  • Strengthen internal controls and improve accounting policies and workflows.

Job description

Type:Regular, Full-Time, Exempt, Confidential Position (not in the union) Location:San Francisco,CA. This is a hybrid role that is required to work in the office 2 days a week. Reports to:Director of Finance Deadline:Applications are due by Friday, September 14 Compensation and Benefits: This is a Full-time, Regular, Exempt, Confidential position. The salary range for this position is $101,480 to $114,223. The compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience. The Opportunity The Accounting Manager reports to the Director of Finance and provides support in overseeing the organization’s day-to-day accounting operations, monthly close, grant and fund accounting, financial reporting, audit preparation, and compliance. This role serves as the primary internal accounting lead responsible for coordinating and reviewing accounting activities performed by the external accounting team and bookkeeping team and ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the organization’s financial records. The Accounting Manager plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls, supporting budget and grant monitoring, and helping ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and organizational policies and procedures.

Since 1972, ALC has fought for access to affordable housing in San Francisco’s Chinatown, litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color, across our Housing Rights, Workers’ Rights, Immigrant Justice, and National Democracy Initiative programs, and other emerging areas of law.

Accounting Operations
  • Coordinate the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close with the Director of Finance and external accounting partners.
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Monitor accounting transactions to ensure proper coding by fund, grant, program, and account.
  • Oversee the work of the external bookkeeping team and ensure timely completion of accounting deliverables.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts, accounting records, and supporting documentation.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.
Financial Reporting & Budgeting Support
  • Prepare monthly financial reports, budget-to-actual analyses, and other management reports.
  • Assist with the annual budget, forecasting, cash flow monitoring, and financial analysis.
  • Support financial reporting for leadership, the Finance Committee, the Board, and program managers.
Grant and Fund Accounting
  • Maintain accurate accounting for grants and restricted funds.
  • Monitor grant expenditures and support grant billings, reimbursements, and financial reports.
  • Help ensure compliance with grant requirements, GAAP, and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Prepare audit schedules and support annual audits, Form 990, 1099 reporting, and other compliance filings.
Contract and Internal Controls
  • Maintain consultant contracts and ensure payments comply with contract terms and approved amendments.
  • Strengthen internal controls and improve accounting policies, procedures, and workflows.
  • Serve as a key finance contact for contract payment status and collaborate with internal teams and external accounting partners to improve financial systems and processes.

  • Experience with nonprofit fund accounting, restricted funds, and grant tracking.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating internal controls.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite and Microsoft SharePoint
  • Experience with ADP or equivalent payroll service as well as QuickBooks and/or other accounting software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with government grants, contracts, and reimbursement-based funding.
  • Experience reviewing or coordinating outsourced bookkeeping or accounting services.
  • Familiarity with IRS Form 990, 1099 reporting, and nonprofit audit processes.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online, BILL, payroll platforms, and related accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of internal controls and accounting process improvement.
