Job summary

The Calvert County Department of Finance & Budget is seeking an Accountant I to join a mission-driven team where your work directly supports the services that keep Calvert County running strong. This entry‑level role offers hands‑on governmental accounting experience and public service stability.

You will perform monthly journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and month‑end closings, while supporting the ACFR, budget processes, and capital projects accounting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting.
  • Two years of accounting experience, preferably governmental or fund accounting.
  • Ability to prepare financial statements and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and GASB for public sector reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Performs monthly journal entries and reconciliations of balance sheet accounts.
  • Supports month-end closing and preparation for annual financial statements.
  • Assists with budget adjustments and journal entries for expense and revenue accounts.
  • Participates in year-end close, audit preparation, and ACFR processes.
  • Monitors project accounting and analyzes financial data for improvements.

Job Description

The Calvert County Department of Finance & Budget is seeking an Accountant I to join a mission-driven team where your work directly supports the services that keep Calvert County running strong. This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level accountant to gain hands‑on experience in governmental accounting while building a stable and rewarding public service career.

Essential Job Functions

Performs monthly journal entries, reconciliations of balance sheet accounts, and month‑end closing process. Ensures transactions are in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Government Accounting Standards Board, local, state and federal laws. Assists in preparing schedules and other supporting documents to substantiate the financial statements for Annual Comprehensive Financial Report and the Official Statement. Participates in the year‑end general ledger closing process, preparation for the County’s annual audit, and preparation of the County’s ACFR. Reviews, analyzes, prepares, and posts budget adjustments or journal entries for expense, revenue, and contingency accounts. Assists with the coordination and development of the various phases of the budget process as directed. Provides technical assistance regarding budgeting and accounting procedures. Assists with capital projects accounting system (adjusting/maintaining balances through budget adjustments, journal postings, setting up new projects, and monitoring purchase orders). Monitors project progress on a regular basis. Completes assigned accounting‑related projects. Compiles and analyzes financial data. Determines adequacy, analyzes, and improves accounting processes and systems.

Other Duties

Assists in the audit process. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of— Accounting principles and practices as applied to accounting and fiscal reporting for public agencies. Administrative practices and procedures as applied to the operations of an accounting department. Ability to— Maintain an assigned group of accounts within an accounting system. Prepare financial statements. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Deal effectively with the public.

Required Qualifications

Training and/or Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting.
Experience: Two years of accounting experience preferably in governmental or fund accounting.
Licenses or Certificates: None. Special Requirements: None.

Physical Demands & Unusual Demands

Physical Demands: Requires ordinary physical effort to sit, walk, stand, bend, reach, or to carry light items.
Unusual Demands: None.
FLSA Status: Exempt.

Compensation Steps
  • Pay rate: $36.01 - $41.33 per hour;
  • $65,538 - $75,221 annually; Grade 723, full‑time position, 35 hours per week.
Location

150 Main Street, Prince Frederick MD 20678. This position allows for telework, meaning the employee may be able to work from home or another offsite location for part of the workweek, but they are still required to come into the office regularly. This arrangement is at the supervisor's discretion and may change based on business needs.
