Job summary

Missionwell is seeking a detail-oriented Accountant who enjoys bringing accuracy, organization, and clarity to financial work. In this role, you will support multiple nonprofit business partners, help keep accounting records and reporting on track, and work closely with bookkeepers and internal team members in a collaborative remote environment.

This fully remote position starts at 30 hours per week with pay prorated from the $65,000-$75,000 range, and is expected to increase to 40 hours per

Qualifications

  • Prior experience performing accounting work for multiple clients, organizations, entities, departments, or comparable workstreams.
  • Education, training, or equivalent experience sufficient to perform Accountant-level responsibilities accurately and independently.
  • Ability to prepare reconciliations, support month-end close, review accounting documentation, and identify or resolve routine discrepancies.
  • Working knowledge of accounting software, Microsoft Office, email, and cloud-based file systems, with the ability to learn new platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, follow-through, time management, and clear professional communication.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, protect confidential information, and ask timely questions when guidance is needed.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate accounting records for assigned nonprofit business partners in accordance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, client requirements, and Missionwell policies.
  • Process and review accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash activity, payroll-related entries, journal entries, and general ledger activity.
  • Prepare reconciliations, account analyses, and supporting schedules; investigate variances and resolve or elevate issues appropriately.
  • Support month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, financial schedules, and related documentation.
  • Prepare or support financial reports, budget-to-actual analyses, grant reports, and other client-facing or internal financial information.
  • Maintain grant, fund, donor, vendor, customer, and program accounting records, including documentation related to restrictions and grant requirements.
  • Review financial activity for accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness, and communicate accounting, internal control, or compliance concerns appropriately.
  • Support audits, tax filings, Form 1099 reporting, and other compliance activities with organized, audit-ready documentation.
  • Partner with assigned bookkeepers to coordinate work, review accuracy and completeness, resolve questions, and deliver timely client work.
  • Help improve and document processes, support automation, and assist with new business partner onboarding and accounting-system transitions.
  • Maintain organized electronic files and manage deadlines across multiple business partners in a remote environment.

Missionwell is looking for a detail-oriented Accountant who enjoys bringing accuracy, organization, and clarity to financial work. In this role, you will support multiple nonprofit business partners, help keep accounting records and reporting on track, and work closely with bookkeepers and internal team members in a collaborative remote environment.

This is a strong opportunity for an accountant who can work independently within established processes, communicate professionally with clients, and manage multiple priorities without losing sight of the details. Regular night and weekend work is not expected.

What You'll Do

Requirements
Required

Preferred, but not required
  • A degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field and at least one year of relevant accounting or bookkeeping experience.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience, including exposure to restricted funds, grant tracking, donor records, or program-based reporting.

A CPA license is not required.

Work Location

This is a fully remote position. Candidates must reside in one of the following states:

California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Tennessee, North Carolina, or Florida. Occasional local travel may be required.

Compensation

The anticipated full-time salary range is $65,000 to $75,000 per year. Starting pay will be based on experience, qualifications, internal equity, and business needs.

Initial schedule and prorated pay:

The role is intended to become a 40-hour-per-week position. It may begin at approximately 30 hours per week, with pay prorated from the stated full-time salary range. An increase to 40 hours is anticipated within approximately six months, but timing may vary based on client work and organizational needs. The posting does not guarantee a specific date or increase in hours.
