Position Summary

An Accountant is responsible for supporting accurate and timely financial reporting by maintaining accounting records, preparing journal entries, completing account reconciliations, assisting with month-end and year-end close activities, and preparing reports and schedules for review. This role works closely with the Controller and other departments to support accounting processes, audit preparation, compliance requirements, and financial information needed for business decision-making.

Key responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate accounting records, including general ledger entries, accounts payable and accounts receivable support, payroll-related accounting entries, reconciliations, fixed assets, and month-end close tasks.
  • Prepare routine financial reports, account analyses, schedules, and supporting documentation for review by the Controller and leadership team.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet account reconciliations, investigate variances, and prepare correcting entries as needed.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close activities by compiling data, preparing journal entries, updating schedules, and ensuring assigned deadlines are met.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes by gathering information, preparing reports, and providing account-level detail as requested.
  • Monitor cash activity, banking transactions, account balances, and related reconciliations to support accurate financial reporting.
  • Support inventory accounting, including inventory valuation, reconciliations, cycle count documentation, reporting, and coordination with operations to resolve discrepancies.
  • Assist with accounts receivable processes, including invoicing support, customer account reconciliations, aging review, payment research, and resolution of account issues.
  • Maintain cooperative patronage and equity records, including member account reconciliations, allocation support, redemption tracking, reporting, and related documentation.
  • Maintain fixed asset records, including additions, disposals, depreciation schedules, and supporting documentation in accordance with company policy and GAAP.
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation, respond to routine information requests, and assist with follow-up items under the direction of the Controller.
  • Support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local reporting requirements by preparing assigned schedules, reports, and filing support documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, documentation, reporting accuracy, and close-cycle efficiency.
  • Provide accurate financial information and analysis to help explain account activity, support cost control, and assist with business decision-making.
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, and timely follow-through.
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles, general ledger activity, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
  • Ability to research account variances, identify discrepancies, and prepare clear supporting documentation.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems, Microsoft Excel, and reporting tools used to prepare schedules, account analyses, and financial reports.
  • Strong organization and time management skills with the ability to manage recurring deadlines and prioritize assigned tasks.
  • Clear and professional communication skills, including the ability to explain account activity and request information from internal teams.
  • Collaborative work style with the ability to partner with the Controller, accounting team, operations, and other departments.
  • Process-minded approach with a willingness to improve documentation, strengthen routine controls, and increase accounting efficiency.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred
Experience
  • 3+ years of accounting experience preferred, including experience with general ledger activity, reconciliations, month-end close, account analysis, and financial reporting support. Public accounting experience beneficial.
Leadership
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate across departments, and support accounting projects or process improvements as assigned.
Work Arrangement
  • Willingness and ability to work on-site at our designated headquarters, with travel to cooperative facilities (elevators, retail sites) and industry meetings.
Technical Expertise
  • Experience with Agvance (SSI) or similar accounting, grain, agronomy, or energy systems preferred.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP, accounting principles, account reconciliations, financial reporting support and audit preparation.
Industry Knowledge
  • Knowledge of grain merchandising financial controls, energy/fuel hedging, agronomy inventory cycles, and retail convenience store metrics.
Communication
  • Ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable reports for non-financial stakeholders like farmer-members.
