Job description

The City of Greensboro Finance Department is seeking detail-oriented and analytical accounting professionals to join its team as Accountants. This recruitment will fill two Accountant positions, with both positions responsible for applying generally accepted accounting principles and governmental accounting standards to financial transactions while supporting accurate financial records, sound financial practices, and responsible stewardship of public resources.

While the positions share core accounting responsibilities, each will have a primary area of assignment and focus within the Finance Department. Both positions will work collaboratively with Finance staff, City departments, auditors, and other stakeholders to support the City's financial operations and reporting requirements.

Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $50,095.00 - $65,915.00 Full Salary Range: $50,095.00 - $89,644.00 Annually

About the Role(s):

As an Accountant, you will apply accounting principles and governmental accounting standards to financial transactions, analyze and reconcile accounts, prepare financial information, and support the accuracy and integrity of the City's financial records. This job is Exempt under FLSA policy.

Both Accountant positions will perform core accounting functions, including:
  • Review and verify financial data to ensure financial records are accurate and fairly stated.
  • Apply generally accepted accounting principles and governmental accounting standards to financial transactions.
  • Perform account analyses and reconciliations as needed.
  • Prepare journal entries and adjusting journal entries and communicate necessary adjustments to Finance staff.
  • Work with City departments and the City's bank to resolve cash reconciliation issues and pending adjustments.
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial reports for Finance staff, City departments, boards, and the State of North Carolina.
  • Prepare assigned schedules and financial information for auditors.
  • Prepare assigned statements, notes, and tables for the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
  • Analyze financial information and research discrepancies to support accurate accounting records.
  • Work with accounting systems, interfaces, and subsystems and understand how transactions interact with the general ledger.
  • Support month‑end and year‑end financial closing activities.
  • Perform other accounting duties and special projects as assigned.
Position Assignment Areas

While both positions share the core responsibilities above, the primary areas of focus will vary by assignment.

Accountant — Cash Reconciliation & Financial Reporting Focus

This position will have primary responsibility for reviewing, verifying, and reconciling the City's bank accounts, including five imprest bank accounts, to the general ledger. Key responsibilities include:

  • Reconcile bank accounts and cash activity to the general ledger.
  • Review and verify financial data and identify adjustments needed to accurately reflect cash transactions.
  • Prepare journal entries and adjusting journal entries related to cash and other financial transactions.
  • Work with City departments and the City's bank to resolve reconciliation issues and pending adjustments.
  • Prepare the annual Statement of Values to update replacement values for City property, including additions and deletions.
  • Prepare assigned audit schedules and financial information for the ACFR.
  • Perform account analyses and other reconciliations as necessary.
Accountant — Financial Systems, Accounts Receivable & Operations Focus

This position will have primary responsibility for oversight and reconciliation of various financial system interfaces and subsystems to the general ledger, as well as selected accounting processes and operational support. Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee and reconcile various financial system interfaces and subsystems to the general ledger.
  • Perform accounting processes for accounts receivable subsidiary ledgers, including adjustments and write‑offs.
  • Provide accounting and customer service assistance to user departments related to accounts receivable activities.
  • Administer, interpret, and monitor compliance with the City's travel policy.
  • Review travel settlements for compliance with City policy and work with departments to resolve discrepancies.
  • Participate in month‑end closing of financial records on a rotating basis with other Accountants and assist with the year‑end closing process.
  • Work with City departments to resolve accounting issues and assist users in obtaining and understanding financial data.
  • Provide instruction and assistance to users on the Lawson financial system.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports and financial information for upper management and City departments.
  • Prepare assigned audit schedules and financial information for the ACFR.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree with 24 hours of Accounting coursework
    • OR an Associate's Degree in Accounting or Business with 6+ years of experience in a professional (FLSA Exempt) governmental or related accounting-level position working with General Ledger activities
  • Experience in Microsoft Office, Access, or PowerPoint
  • 1+ years of Financial, Accounting, or Audit experience
    • OR Recent Graduate with applied experience or Internship at an accounting firm
  • Must have, within 3 years of hire date, an NC Certified Finance Officer designation through the program administered by the School of Government at UNC-Chapel Hill
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business with 24 hours of Accounting coursework
  • CPA or CPA candidate
  • N. C. Local Government Finance Officer Certification
  • 3+ years of experience in the accounting or governmental accounting field
  • Experience working with budgets and analyzing variances
  • Experience using financial Reports or Infor
  • Experience with Accounting Systems/sub ledger packages
