Job Summary

The Press seeks to enhance its level of back-up, redundancy, and consistency in accounting functions and duties - specifically with respect to balance sheet account reconciliations. This position will focus on monthly balance sheet reconciliations including accounts receivable (A/R), accounts payable (A/P), and cash for all three Press divisions (Books, Journals, and the Chicago Distribution Center).

Under the general supervision of the CFO and the immediate supervision of the Accounting Director and the Accountant/Senior Analyst, this position will concentrate on monthly balance sheet account reconciliations for the three Press divisions: Books, Journals, and the CDC. This position will be part of the team that includes the Accountant/Senior Analyst and will work closely with that person – providing help where needed.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the Press’s accounts receivable (A/R), accounts payable (A/P), and cash transactions – deposits, refunds, chargebacks, etc. - are accurate and that all activity is properly accounted for on the various internal systems and University ledgers – and are reconciled on a monthly basis.

  • Responsible for annual University audit workpaper efforts concerning balance sheet account reconciliations.

  • Assist in monthly accounting entries based on CISPUB and PUBS system reports.

  • Interprets accounting records for the purpose of determining gains and losses, receipts and disbursements, and inventory.

  • Performs a variety of operating or cost accounting activities which require moderate knowledge of accounting theories and principles.

  • Other tasks as assigned by the Accounting Director.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Experience:

  • Three years of accounting work experience.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Excel

Preferred Competencies

  • Exceptional general computer spreadsheet and mathematical skills.

  • Work in detail with very large reports and spreadsheets.

  • Ability to become familiar with multiple computer systems and technologies.

  • Work independently and over time to work with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent organizational skills.
