The University of Utah’s Center for Disability & Access seeks an Accessible Media Specialist to support students with disabilities by ensuring accessible course content and technology accommodations.

You will collaborate with faculty, train students on assistive technologies (JAWS, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, ZoomText, Otter, OneNote), oversee production of accessible materials, and help coordinate services while upholding FERPA confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a related field or equivalent experience; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Two years of related experience and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to use assistive technology and coordinate accommodations.

Accessible Media Specialist
Job Summary

The Center for Disability & Access provides access for studentswith disabilities at the University of Utah. The CDA empowersstudents with disabilities to accomplish their educational goals byfacilitating access and promoting a welcoming environment.

This position provides direct student support as well as providingsupport to ensure accessible course content.

Responsibilities

Responsible for providing University of Utah support by meetingfederal mandates regarding accommodating students withdisabilities.

  • Complete media interviews with students who are Blind, lowvision, deaf, hard of hearing, or students with related print andauditory disabilities and determine the technology interventionsneeded
  • Facilitate student success a support a welcoming environment bycoordinating services for students with disabilities
  • Provide program support to ensure course content is accessibleto students with disabilities this includes monitoring coursecontent, assignments, supplemental materials, reviewing Canvascontent
  • Advises faculty about students with technology basedaccommodation needs
  • Uses third party applications to manage assistive technology,captioning, alternative text and other technologybased-accommodation requests for students registered with theCenter for Disability & Access.
  • Consults with faculty to remediate existing course content,which may include providing accommodations for individuals withmobility, hearing, visual, or learning impairments
  • Train students on assistive technology applications andprograms used on campus
  • Oversee creation and organize production of accessiblematerials
  • Provide support to students technology programs including JAWS,Dragon Naturally Speaking, ZoomText, Glean, Otter, One Note,etc.
  • Communicate frequently with students to ensure understanding ofthe course accommodations, schedules, and program services
  • Provides classroom assistance for students with disabilities toaccess course content including and/or acting as a reader, scribe,assistant to reach for materials, conduct classroom assignments atthe direction of the student (lab experiments, group assignments,etc.)
  • Support exam accommodations for students by preparing exams,producing exam content in alternative format (text, speech, print,audio), and proctor examinations
  • Adhere to regulations under the Americans with DisabilitiesAct
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records, grades, andmaterials used in coursework in compliance with the FamilyEducational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Participate in professional development activities tocontinually improve current knowledge and skills related toaccommodation services.
  • Respond to staff or student concerns and provide assistance orescalate to a supervisor as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in a related field, or equivalency (one year ofeducation can be substituted for two years of related workexperience), plus two years of related experience required; abilityto use logic and reasoning to prioritize tasks; computer skillsincluding word processing, spreadsheet software, and/or databasesoftware preferred; demonstrated human relation and effectivecommunication skills also required.

Bachelor's degree in a related field may be preferred.

Monday – Friday from 8 am – 5 pm.Some adjustment in work hours based on students' schedules. Due tonature of tasks for direct student classroom support, this positionrequires job tasks completed in office. Occasional remote work maybe approved by the supervisor.
