Job description

Help shape how patients access ambulatory care across UVA Health. The Access Implementation Team Lead strengthens the workflows, decision trees, and operational practices that connect patients with the right provider, visit type, timing, and scheduling instructions. This hybrid leadership opportunity supports the continued success of the One Team United on Access initiative; a multi-year effort focused on improving patient access across the ambulatory environment. As a trusted subject matter expert, you will guide sustainability teams, advance workflow standardization, and help ambulatory practices sustain effective scheduling processes over time.

The Role

The Access Implementation Team Lead provides technical and operational leadership to Access Operations Liaisons and Access Program Coordinators. You will combine hands-on workflow expertise with training, coaching, documentation oversight, and process improvement to promote consistency across specialties and implementation waves.

This is a leadership role without direct people-management responsibilities, offering the opportunity to influence outcomes through expertise, collaboration, and a clear understanding of ambulatory access operations. Your work will directly support the teams responsible for helping patients navigate complex scheduling pathways.

In An Average Day, You May
  • Provide technical guidance and workflow support to Access Operations Liaisons and Access Program Coordinators.
  • Review decision trees and scheduling instructions to identify opportunities for standardization, clarity, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead training, education, coaching, and onboarding activities for team members supporting access implementation and sustainability.
  • Participate in sustainability meetings with specialty groups and help address post-implementation workflow needs.
  • Maintain best-practice documentation and ensure operational resources remain current and actionable.
  • Use Microsoft Visio, SharePoint, Smartsheet, Excel, and Word to support workflow design, documentation, tracking, and communication.
  • Partner across specialty teams to strengthen consistency throughout the One Team United on Access initiative.
  • Provide backup coverage for Access Operations Liaisons during staffing shortages, planned time away, or other operational needs.
  • Perform liaison-level responsibilities when hands-on operational support is required.
  • Help ensure that improvements remain sustainable after implementation and continue to support reliable patient scheduling.

The position is based at 2211 Hydraulic Road and follows a hybrid schedule, with an onsite presence required each Wednesday. Additional onsite support may be needed during go-lives or special initiatives.

Why UVA Health

At UVA Health, access is an essential part of the patient experience. Effective scheduling workflows help patients reach the appropriate clinical team with the information and timing needed to support coordinated care. In this role, your expertise will have direct influence on patient access across the ambulatory network.

You will join a collaborative, project-focused team supporting a mature organizational initiative and its long-term sustainability. This position offers meaningful visibility across specialties and the opportunity to shape operational practices that can improve both patient and team-member experiences.

Role

UVA Health offers an environment where healthcare operations, academic medicine, clinical expertise, and continuous improvement come together. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Step into a leadership-level position while remaining closely connected to operational work.
  • Serve as a recognized subject matter expert in access workflows and implementation methodology.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional specialty teams throughout UVA Health.
  • Lead through influence, technical expertise, training, and relationship-building.
  • Advance decision-tree quality and workflow standardization across implementation waves.
  • Develop broader experience in education, coaching, documentation governance, and process improvement.
  • Support an initiative designed to strengthen how patients navigate access to specialty care.
  • Work in a hybrid environment with limited routine onsite requirements.

This opportunity is especially well suited to an experienced access professional who understands the One Team United on Access methodology and is ready to expand their impact through operational leadership, sustainability planning, and workflow optimization.
