Academic & Professional Advisor
Location: Syracuse, NY
The Academic and Professional Advisor plays an important role in the work of the College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell advising team. This position will be a professional advisor serving undergraduate students who have declared a major.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide academic and professional (career and graduate pathway) advising in one‑on‑one sessions for an assigned cohort of undergraduate students.
- Ensure that all curricular requirements are met for on‑time graduation.
- Assist students with academic records, registration, degree audits, and maintaining accurate student records.
- Support students in utilizing career‑related software such as Handshake, Big Interview, VMock, Goin Global, and other tools.
- Present workshops on major/minor selection, program requirements, credit requirements, career development, job search strategies, and graduate school planning.
- Coordinate special events and group advising sessions, including collaborative events across campus for Arts & Sciences/Maxwell students.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff in schools and colleges within SU to guide students toward successful college and post‑college paths, with a focus on law‑related pathways.
- Partner with Alumni and Employer Relations (Central) to assist students in achieving education and career goals.
- Serve as the main point of contact for students and guide them through various program options in the University.
- Maintain relationships with lead advisors, identify, track, and report metrics on all career‑related outcomes such as student appointments, career education engagement, internships, and placement into career and graduate school.
- Administer and interpret career‑related assessments and report metrics to advising leadership as requested.
- Identify and support at‑risk students, providing referrals to academic departments and university resources such as the Center for Learning and Student Success, college tutoring options, writing center, math clinic, Office of Student Assistance, Counseling Center, financial aid, residence life, Central Exploration Advisors, and other SU resources.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred).
- 3+ years of experience in academic advising at the college level.
- Expertise in academic counseling methods and career modeling, including interpretation of individual aptitude and career assessment instruments.
- Experience in career exploration and counseling as part of academic advising.
- Ability to communicate and work with diverse populations.
- Excellent interpersonal, planning, teamwork, and organizational skills.
- Ability to independently interpret and recommend improvements in advising policy and procedure.
