Job summary

Albany Medical Center seeks a Pathologists' Assistant to join the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Capital Region's only academic medical center. You will work with subspecialty pathologists, residents, and histology staff in a busy academic environment with a broad case mix.

Key duties include gross examination, sampling, intraoperative consultation support, and mentoring pathology residents.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in gross pathology techniques and specimen handling.
• Experience supporting surgical pathology teams and residents.
• Ability to teach and mentor learners in grossing and pathology technique.

Responsibilities

• Perform gross examination, description, dissection, and sampling of a broad spectrum of surgical pathology specimens, from routine biopsies to complex oncologic cases.
• Evaluate and prepare tissue for intraoperative consultation and frozen section, collaborating with pathologists during time-sensitive decisions.
• Photograph and document gross specimens, ensure correct orientation, sampling, and submission.
• Serve as a resource for difficult specimens and promote high-quality grossing practices.
• Teach and mentor pathology residents and learners; pursue academic title through promotion committee.
• Collaborate with pathologists, residents, histology staff, operating room personnel, and leadership to improve quality and workflow.
• Participate in quality improvement, procedure development, validation, education, and related departmental initiatives.
