Job summary

Albany Medical Center’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks a Pathologists’ Assistant to join our academic medical center. You will perform gross examination, dissection, sampling, and documentation across a broad spectrum of surgical pathology specimens, collaborating with pathologists, residents, and histology staff.

You will also teach and mentor residents, contribute to education and laboratory practice, and participate in quality improvement and departmental initiatives

Qualifications

• Experience performing gross examination, dissection and sampling of a broad spectrum of surgical pathology specimens.
• Ability to evaluate tissue for intraoperative consultation and frozen section.
• Photograph and document gross specimens with accurate orientation and submission.
• Teach and mentor pathology residents and learners in grossing techniques.
• Collaborate with pathologists, residents, histology staff and leadership to improve quality and workflow.

Responsibilities

• Perform gross examination, description, dissection and sampling of surgical pathology specimens.
• Evaluate and prepare tissue for intraoperative consultation and frozen section with pathologists.
• Photograph and document gross specimens with correct orientation and sampling.
• Serve as a resource for difficult specimens and promote high-quality grossing practices.
• Teach and mentor pathology residents and learners in gross examination and technique.
• Collaborate with pathologists, residents, histology staff, OR personnel, and leadership to improve quality and workflow.
• Participate in quality improvement, procedure development and departmental initiatives.
