Job summary

Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan is seeking an Academic Mentor – Work Study to plan and supervise after‑school educational activities for children and youth. You will promote participation, provide guidance, and model positive youth development in a safe, engaging environment.

Hours are Monday–Friday from 2–6pm; reports to Unit/Area Directors. CPR/First Aid training is provided. A high school diploma or GED and experience with youth are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with children or youth.
  • Knowledge of youth development and positive youth engagement.
  • Ability to build positive, supportive relationships with youth.
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior appropriately.
  • Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth.
  • Ability to provide academic support and explain concepts patiently.
  • Ability to organize and supervise youth in a safe environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Valid state driver’s license (van drivers only).
  • CPR/First Aid certification (training provided).

Before school, after school, during the summer months and on Friday nights, the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan engages members in fun and educational activities that help develop a sound moral compass and influence their ability to succeed in life.

Academic Mentor – Work Study

Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan:

Pay: $12 an hour

Hours: M-F 2-6pm

Reports to: Unit/Area Directors or other designees

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Plan, implement, supervise, and promote educational activities and programs after school for children and youth.

KEY ROLES: Essential Job Responsibilities

Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:

  • Promote and stimulate program participation.
  • Provide guidance and role modeling to members.
Program Development and Implementation
  • Effectively implement and administer programs, services, and activities for members and visitors.
  • Monitor and evaluate programs, services, and activities to ensure the safety of members, quality of programs, and appearance of the Club at all times.
  • Demonstrate leadership to assure the conduct, safety, and development of members.
  • Evaluate programs on a continual basis and ensure programs and activities are inclusive of gender and cultural diversity.
Supervision
  • Oversee proper record keeping and reporting, including activities and events conducted, participation figures, and any member conduct or other issues.
  • Ensure productive and effective performance of program staff and volunteers.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with children or youth.
  • Knowledge of youth development and positive youth engagement.
  • Ability to build positive, supportive relationships with youth.
  • Ability to motivate youth and appropriately manage behavior.
  • Ability to plan and implement quality programs and activities for youth.
  • Ability to provide academic support and explain concepts in a patient, encouraging, and age-appropriate manner.
  • Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe and engaging environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid state driver's license (van drivers only).
  • CPR/First Aid certification (training provided).
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED
  • Coursework completed toward an elementary or secondary education degree.
  • Previous experience providing tutoring, academic support, or educational programming.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • May be required to drive the Club van.
  • May be required to answer phones and perform other light administrative duties.
