PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Academic Intervention Specialist provides targeted, data-driven academic support to students identified as academically at risk. This role supports students in building foundational skills across core content areas, including literacy and mathematics. The Intervention Specialist works to close achievement gaps by delivering high-quality, small-group instruction, supporting intervention systems, and collaborating with school staff to ensure students receive the support necessary for academic success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Academic Intervention & Instruction
  • Provides targeted, small-group instruction in reading and other core academic areas based on student needs.
  • Implements evidence-based intervention strategies aligned to student data and identified skill gaps.
  • Delivers Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.
  • Supports students in developing foundational academic skills, including literacy, numeracy, and learning behaviors.
Data-Driven Instruction & Progress Monitoring
  • Uses multiple data sources (IREAD, ILEARN, iReady, diagnostics, formative assessments) to identify students in need of intervention.
  • Monitors student progress regularly and adjusts instruction based on data.
  • Maintains accurate records of student progress and intervention effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with teachers and leaders to analyze data and refine intervention plans.
Student Support & Engagement
  • Builds strong relationships with students to increase engagement, confidence, and ownership of learning.
  • Supports students in developing positive academic habits and persistence.
  • Motivates students to improve performance and take accountability for their learning.
Collaboration & Instructional Support
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers to align interventions with core instruction.
  • Participates in PLCs, MTSS meetings, and data meetings to support school-wide improvement efforts.
  • Provides strategies and support to teachers for differentiating instruction and supporting at-risk learners.
Program Implementation & Compliance
  • Implements intervention programs with fidelity.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and district requirements related to intervention services.
  • Maintains communication with families regarding student progress and support strategies.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Participates in professional development focused on intervention strategies and student support.
  • Assists other personnel as needed to support an effective school environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Evidence-based intervention strategies in reading and mathematics
  • MTSS frameworks and tiered intervention systems
  • Data analysis and progress monitoring tools
Skill in:
  • Delivering small-group, differentiated instruction
  • Using data to inform instruction and intervention decisions
  • Utilizing instructional technology and assessment tools
Ability to:
  • Support diverse learners with varying academic needs
  • Collaborate effectively with teachers and school leaders
  • Adjust instruction based on student response and data
  • Build positive relationships that support student growth
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master's degree in reading, curriculum and instruction, or related field preferred

Experience providing academic intervention to at-risk students strongly preferred

CERTIFICATION

Valid Indiana teaching license (Early Literacy endorsement preferred but not required)
