Job description

Overview

The position is an Academic CRNA role at WVU Medicine, blending clinical anesthesia practice with academic duties in the WVU School of Nursing’s DNP Nurse Anesthetist Program. The Lecturer works with the Program Director and Assistant Program Director, reporting to the Department Chair, and serves as a nurse anesthetist academic and clinical faculty member.

Responsibilities

• Clinical Duties: Maintain patient safety; manage airway techniques and equipment; work within delineated clinical privileges; minimize infection risks; protect patient confidentiality; participate in pre-anesthetic evaluations; perform anesthesia techniques (e.g., IV access, arterial access as per protocol, intubation/extubation); monitor patient responses to anesthesia; manage induction, maintenance, and emergence of general, regional, and monitored anesthesia; recognize adverse reactions, initiate corrective actions, order necessary labs, and provide postoperative care; administer IV fluids and blood products when appropriate; document anesthesia care; perform safety checks on anesthesia equipment; assist with informed consent review and surgical site verification; participate in the surgical pause; communicate with the perioperative team; provide anesthesia care in emergencies when an anesthesiologist is unavailable; assist with teaching and evaluating new CRNAs, GRNAs, SRNAs; maintain controlled substances per policy and regulations; uphold professionalism.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
• Unencumbered nursing license or eligibility for licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia if out of state.
• Active certification or recertification as a CRNA by NBCRNA.
• Three to five years of clinical CRNA practice.
• Experience with academic education, preferably within a nurse anesthetist program, including curriculum development, evaluation, and instruction.

Academic Duties

• Serve on committees of the program and assist with admissions of nurse anesthetist cohorts.
• Design and provide expert didactic, simulation, and clinical instruction for nurse anesthetist students using innovative approaches.
• Participate in DNP committee activities, including advising as Faculty of Record for up to eight DNP projects.
• Complete programmatic documentation according to COA and WVU School of Nursing policies (philosophy, objectives, master schedule, organizational charts, policies, budget, minutes, statistics, course materials, exams, and self-study reports).
• Model clinical excellence; be responsive and accessible to student inquiries; promote collegiality and teamwork; uphold ethical and professional standards; maintain current education and clinical skills; maintain CRNA certification and active practice; network to promote the DNP Nurse Anesthetist program; represent the program to internal and external audiences; strengthen program relations with the School of Nursing, WVU, and related stakeholders.
