Job summary

The University of Maine System is seeking an Academic Computing Specialist to join our IT team, supporting the University of Southern Maine's CS & Technology programs. This role emphasizes Linux, automation, and modern infra across teaching, research, and software development.

Ideal candidates are early-career IT professionals or recent graduates with a passion for Linux, cloud technologies, and collaborative work with faculty.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in CS/IT/SE/cybersecurity or related field.
• Experience via internships, undergraduate research, student work, or significant projects.
• Experience supporting computer hardware and software.
• Proficiency with Linux in support/administration roles.
• Familiarity with imaging, system administration, cloud tech, virtualization, and software development.
• Knowledge of scripting/programming languages (Python, Bash, Java, C++, or similar).
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Valid driver's license; ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Administer and maintain Linux-based instructional and research computing environments.
• Support academic technologies including JupyterLab/JupyterHub, virtualization, and containers.
• Develop automation tools and scripts with Python and Bash.
• Assist with infrastructure automation, config management, and cloud services.
• Collaborate with faculty to implement computing solutions for teaching/research.
• Support specialized software used in CS and STEM programs.
• Create technical documentation and provide training/assistance to faculty, staff, and students.
• Research and evaluate emerging technologies to enhance academic computing.
