About the Opportunity

Kalamazoo Valley is seeking a Full-Time Academic & Career Pathway Advisor to facilitate student success and goal achievement through a holistic approach. The advisor will advise Early Middle College and other students through assigned pathways.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provides academic and career advising for assigned academic pathway programs and affinity groups.
  • Administers and interprets career assessments.
  • Teaches career decision making and provides career resources to help students determine a solid education and career path including educational pathway selection, course recommendations and sequencing.
  • Develops individualized student educational plans within an electronic planning system and provides referrals to other college support services as needed for timely progress toward completion.
  • Develops and implements pathway-specific career curriculum and program planning.
  • Monitors academic progress of students in assigned caseload, recommends and/or makes adjustments, manages early alerts and provides both preventative and just-in-time intervention measures from pre-enrollment to completion.
  • Represents the assigned pathway in proactively recruiting and enrolling students in activities and events.
  • Develops, coordinates and facilitates activities such as classroom presentations, workshops, orientations, special targeted events and outreach initiatives for Student Development Services.
  • Develops self-assessment tools and curriculum for college-wide programming.
  • Collaborates with faculty, counselors and staff to improve course sequencing, transfer and timely intervention initiatives to increase student retention and degree completion.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff throughout the college to promote student academic and career success, acts as a liaison to faculty within assigned pathway and works in conjunction with First Year Experience ( FYE ) faculty to support students enrolled in FYE courses.
  • Trains and mentors new advisors on assessments, curriculum procedures and onboarding and serves as a lead advisor, as needed, in coordinating schedules and identifying training and development opportunities for advisors.
  • Manages and maintains career and program websites, consolidate reports and monitors outcome surveys.
  • Participates on college committees and teams focused on student success.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Appropriate education, training, experience and talents are a requirement. An example of this would be a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as social science, and two (2) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of training, education and experience.

  • Knowledge of college programs, courses, services, resources and instructional programs.
  • Skill in building relationships with students.
  • Skill in interpreting career assessments.
  • Skill in leading teams.
  • Skill in use of academic monitoring systems.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public.

Work Hours

Hours will vary, typically 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with one night per week until 7:00 PM required, to serve students. Other occasional evening hours will be required for special events and orientation coverage as assigned.
