Position Summary

Are you passionate about supporting students in their academic and professional journeys? The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) at San Diego State University is seeking a dedicated Academic Adviser to join our team. This role provides an exciting opportunity to offer equity-minded academic advising and support to a diverse population of students. As part of a dynamic team, you will help guide students through academic challenges and assist them in progressing toward degree completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising: Provide academic advising for an assigned caseload of students, covering major, General Education (GE), University requirements, study abroad, transfer credits, and graduation requirements.
  • At-Risk Student Support: Support students facing academic challenges, including those on probation, disqualification, or unsatisfactory academic progress, by identifying issues and connecting them with appropriate campus resources.
  • Holistic Support: Assist students in managing academic withdrawals and create action plans to promote academic recovery and success.
  • Student Engagement: Conduct individual appointments, group advising sessions, and virtual meetings. Respond to inquiries via email, phone, and in person.
  • Retention Initiatives: Contribute to initiatives that facilitate student retention and academic progression.
  • Policy Development: Help in the development and implementation of advising policies and practices within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts.

Position Information

  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) is one of eight instructional units of San Diego State University. The College is comprised of ten diverse departments and schools: the departments of Aerospace Studies, Military Science and Naval Science; the schools of Art, Design and Art History, Communication, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Journalism and Media Studies, Music and Dance, Public Affairs, and Theatre, Television and Film as well as ten research centers. The College is staffed by 49 positions comprised of administrative, clerical and technical staff in addition to approximately 260 tenured/tenure-track faculty and lecturers serving over 5,000 majors.

The Dean’s Office is responsible for the creation, implementation and continued support of the instructional, research, and development processes in the College.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Key Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of barriers for students from underrepresented groups.
  • Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse range of students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ability to recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and effectively presenting to audiences of varying backgrounds and group sizes.
  • Experience in student advising or supporting students in an academic or educational setting.
  • Experience explaining and interpreting academic policies and procedures in various communication formats, including in-person, phone, video conferencing, and email.
  • Familiarity with general education and graduation requirements in higher education, particularly within public university systems preferred.
  • Three years of experience in student services, academic advising, admissions, registrar functions, or a related area within higher education preferred.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,083 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228 per month.
