Job summary

Middle Georgia State University (MGA) seeks an Academic Advisor I - Dual Enrollment to support high school students and MGA students through comprehensive academic advising. You will guide course selection, degree planning, and enrollment processes while coordinating with High School Counselors and campus staff.

The role requires some evenings and weekend work with travel across MGA campuses as needed. A Bachelor's degree and valid driver's license are required, with a non-exempt hourly pay

Job Summary

The position performs integrated academic advisement that supports student retention and graduation for prospective and current students by guiding the students through data informed decision processes. This is a continuous and consistent process, which is built upon the basis of accurate communication and consistent personal contact between the advisor and advisee. This position requires some evenings and weekend work. Candidates will reside at one of the MGA campuses or be asked to cover several campuses, hence, travel to other campuses may be required.

Responsibilities
Advising (80%) -
  • Assist and accurately guide students in defining and developing realistic educational career plans through academic schedule planning (mapping the curriculum) for each semester.
  • Advise students about academic policies, selection of a major including processing major change requests, course requirements, pre-requisites, grades, and graduation requirements.
  • Work with High School Counselors to assist students in course selection and class registration.
  • Serve as a resource specialist to students in the implementation of academic advising services and support.
  • Assist with Enrollment Management in providing advising services at institutional events such as open house, orientation, and call campaigns to increase enrollment.
  • Assist in high school and on-campus visits concerning Dual Enrollment.
Monitoring (15%) -
  • Monitor progress toward educational goals by meeting with dual enrolled students to discuss the proposed academic program, current grades, and other performance indicators.
  • Inform and refer students to other appropriate institutional resources such as Student Success Center, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Counseling Services.
  • Assist with data collection and data entry.
  • Use appropriate University systems to maintain appropriate student files, records and advisor notes.
  • Use appropriate Georgia Department of Education policies and procedures to ensure high school graduation.
  • Monitor progress of Georgia Student Finance Commission online dual enrollment funding applications to ensure term payment.
Other Duties (5%) -
  • Assist with contacting students including scheduling appointments, notification of meetings and special events.
  • Assist with the implementation of marketing strategies.
  • Understand and abide by student privacy regulations such as FERPA.
  • Participate in on-going professional development.
  • Participate with Advisor II and III on special projects or tasks as assigned/approved by supervisor.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or deemed necessary to meet the Academic Advising goals on any campus.
  • Coordinate with Dual Enrollment recruiter of high school visits, information nights, and deadlines.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience in higher education, working knowledge of DegreeWorks
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in a post-secondary or professional advising position.
