Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking an entry-level ACADEMIC ADVISOR I who is passionate about student success and committed to engaging with business students from varied backgrounds. The successful candidate will be teachable about the philosophy of advising, have excellent communication skills, be able to create and maintain collaborative relationships with others in the School and students, and be engaged with furthering their own professional development through coursework, workshops, webinars, and similar activities.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provides guidance and advice to students on course selection, prerequisites, career planning, and continuing higher education. Proactively identifies and supports students not meeting academic expectations (e.g., warning, probation, suspension). Contacts unregistered students for outreach and retention. Coordinates support services, including referrals. Assists with student recruitment, orientation, and retention (some evening and weekend work required). Serves on committees as needed. Maintains accurate records and confidentiality. Prepares reports and assists with curriculum scheduling. Processes degree applications.
  2. Continues education beyond hire through coursework, webinars, and conferences. Attends training to increase knowledge and develop cross-campus networks. Seeks advice and mentorship from senior advisors and directors.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, or a related field and two (2) years of related experience are required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education.

The ideal candidate should be able to learn the curriculum technically and apply it to student plans. Understand the history and role of academic advising, core values, theories, approaches, and outcomes. Be aware of creating inclusive environments and adhere to ethical guidelines outlined by the university and NACADA. Articulate a personal advising philosophy, create rapport, and maintain relationships. Communicate inclusively and competently, facilitating student appointments. Continue developing oral and written communication skills.
