Reports To: Director of Advising and Counseling

Position Type: Full Time, Administrative (Exempt)

General Summary:

The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing holistic academic advising to prospective and enrolled students. This position assists students with academic planning, career and transfer exploration, goal setting, and navigation of college resources. In addition, the advisor serves as the college's primary point of contact for veterans, active‑duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, and eligible dependents, helping students access educational benefits and successfully transition to and persist in college.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Examples of duties performed by this position include:

  • Provide holistic academic advising and comprehensive support services to students.
  • Assist students in developing educational plans aligned with academic, career, transfer, and personal goals. Evaluate student progress toward completion of goals.
  • Guide students through course selection, degree requirements, program changes, and academic or college policies.
  • Guide students in identifying transfer pathways and understanding transfer requirements.
  • Monitor student progress and conduct outreach to students experiencing academic challenges.
  • Serve as the primary campus contact for veteran and military‑affiliated students.
  • Serve as the School Certifying Official and assist students in understanding the utilization of VA benefits, including the GI Bill and related programs.
  • Monitor changes in federal and state regulations affecting veteran educational benefits.
  • Maintain advising notes in the college’s early alert system.
  • Participate in student retention and completion initiatives.
  • Present workshops and informational sessions on academic planning, transfer, career pathways, and student success strategies.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus and community resources, including tutoring, counseling, financial aid, accessibility services, and community support agencies.
  • Serve on college committees as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education, counseling, student affairs, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of related work experience in academic advising, counseling, student services, veteran services or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in education, counseling, student affairs, or a related field.
  • Experience with student information systems (Colleague) and early alert and communication systems (Watermark).
  • Knowledge of VA educational benefits and veteran support resources.
