Job summary

Adams State University in Alamosa, CO, is seeking a First Year Advising Center professional to deliver academic advising to admitted undergraduates and support the Director of Academic Advising.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic advising services to undergraduate students, including intervention for students not making satisfactory progress.
  • Initiates retention contacts with advisees behind in registration for the upcoming semester.
  • Refer advisees to other campus resources as needed.
  • Assist Director in verifying majors and assigning advisors.
  • Provide individualized coaching to students on academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Coordinates all major/minor/advisor assignments and changes with various departments.
  • Engages in outreach to identify students who may benefit from coaching, especially from at‑risk groups.
  • Develops relationships with offices such as Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid, and Student Support Services to better serve students.
  • Participates in departmental and committee meetings supporting assigned students; serves on Academic SOS committee.
  • Supervises Student Success Center kiosk ambassadors in director's absence; acts as Campus Security Authority; performs other duties to support the First Year Advising Center.

This position in the First Year Advising Center delivers academic advising (which includes intervention as deemed necessary) to admitted undergraduate students and provides support to the Director of Academic Advising.

Specific Job Duties (Essential Functions and Responsibilities):
Student Advising and Support:
  • Provides academic advising services to undergraduate students, including the use of intrusive advising methods, as deemed necessary, for advisees identified as not making Satisfactory Academic Progress
  • Initiates retention contacts with advisees who are behind in registration for the subsequent semester
  • Refer advisees to other ASU resources as needed
  • Assists Director of Academic Advising in verifying majors of newly admitted students and assigning appropriate advisors
  • Provide individualized coaching to students, helping them set academic, career, and personal goals, and developing strategies for achieving them.
Program Coordination:
  • Coordinates all major/minor/advisor assignments and changes, including communication to various departments
  • Assists Director of Academic Advising in verifying majors of newly admitted students and assigning appropriate advisors
  • Serves as a point of contact and coach for the student success coaching initiative.
  • Engage in outreach efforts to identify students who may benefit from coaching, especially those in at‑risk or underrepresented groups.
  • Develops and coordinates relationships with various offices on campus (e.g., Registrar’s Office, Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Support Services) to better serve students
  • Participates in departmental and committee meetings as appropriate for supporting assigned students
  • Participates on Academic SOS committee
Operational Support:
  • Supervises Student Success Center kiosk ambassadors in absence of director of academic advising
  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority, as federally mandated under the Clery Act.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the First Year Advising Center
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 1 year of experience in academic advising, student services, or a related higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of degree programs and corresponding career options
  • Understanding of educational requirements and advising processes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with various software technology proficiency and software applications
  • Strong organizational skills including an ability to multitask
  • Ability to work occasional flexible hours
  • Ability to work with diverse, non-traditional, and underserved student populations in a compassionate, firm and structured manner.
  • Ability to treat others with respect, civility, and courtesy and to work honestly, effectively, and collegially with employees, students, and the community. This includes the ability to use appropriate conflict management skills to effectively manage any disagreement that might arise or to bring the disagreement to management for assistance in productive resolution when the situation requires.
  • Ability to perform with diplomacy, confidentiality and professionalism.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in higher education as part of an academic team
  • Experience in academic advising and/or adult counseling
  • Experience with student data systems (e.g., Banner, Degree Works, Workday)
  • Ability to perform above primary duties

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $43,100-51,700. In addition to salary, Adams State University offers a competitive benefits program including medical, dental, vision, disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, and retirement savings plans.
