Job summary

The University of Louisiana at Monroe is seeking an Academic Advisor for the Student Success Center to support majors and undeclared students, focusing on early intervention and building academic and college survival skills. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising for new and continuing students across disciplines.
  • Assist with pre-advising sessions, faculty training, and materials development.
  • Offer career planning in collaboration with Career Connections.
  • Direct students to campus/community resources and resolve curriculum issues.
  • Evaluate transfer credits and applicability to degree programs.
  • Collaborate on retention initiatives, workshops, and related programs.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of university policies and handbooks.
  • Collect data, create reports, and maintain student files.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in committees.
  • May supervise undergraduate and graduate students; assist in training.
  • Support Beginning Freshmen Initiative and other retention programs.
  • Prepare for and teach UNIV 1001 and 1010; teach other university classes as directed.
  • Engage with target student groups and perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Serve as an Academic Advisor to majors as assigned in the Student Success Center, which offers support services to ULM students. For students that have declared an academic major, the focus will be on early intervention and strengthening academic and/or college survival skills. Career planning will be offered as needed.

  • Provides academic advising, including analysis and integration, for new and continuing college students, collegiate students, specifically, for all disciplines advised in the Clarke M. Williams Student Success Center.
  • Provides academic advising assistance for majors other than those stated above to all colleges across campus. This assistance may be pre-advising sessions, training to faculty advisors, materials development and creation, as needed.
  • Provides career planning, helping students make decisions on college majors and career opportunities. Collaborates with Career Connections and refers students to career information.
  • Makes students aware of campus and community resources. Resolves problems related to curriculum, course prerequisites, and eligibility by referring to catalogues and other appropriate resource material.
  • Evaluates transfer credits and applicability of academic credit to program requirements.
  • Collaborates as a team member on development, coordination, and implementation of student retention initiatives, workshops, and other related programs.
  • Remains up-to-date regarding university policies, procedures, and student requirements; includes familiarity with student handbooks, ULM catalogs, degree requirements, drop/adds, financial aid, etc.
  • Collects data and participates in assessment of services. Creates reports and maintains student files. Uses technology to enhance delivery of service to students.
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions, and maintains currency in profession. Participates on college committees as needed.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of Student Success Center materials.
  • May supervise undergraduate and graduate student employees; may participate in training and evaluative sessions and recommend methods to improve performance.
  • Plays an instrumental role in the processing, support services, and referrals related to the Beginning Freshmen Initiative and other retention programs.
  • Prepares for and teaches the University Seminar (UNIV 1001 & 1010) each fall and spring semester; prepares and teaches other university classes in appropriate content areas as directed.
  • Works with target students like scholarship recipients, emerging scholars, non-traditional students, and other groups as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
