Indiana University Bloomington's College of Arts and Sciences seeks an Academic Advisor to support undergraduates across the Eskenazi School, Hamilton Lugar School, and Media School. Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field; higher‑education experience is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic counseling for undergraduates pursuing majors, minors, or certificates.
  • Guides students in planning course of study in line with curricular requirements.
  • Assists students in selecting majors, minors, and career or graduate school directions.
  • Teaches navigation of university systems, policies, and processes.
  • Recommends campus resources and opportunities (internships, overseas study, etc.).
  • Tracks academic progress and maintains confidential records.
  • Represents advising at campus meetings and supports materials for events.
  • Develops best practices for academic advising and related initiatives.

Indiana University’s College of Arts and Sciences is a professional organization comprising three schools—the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, the Media School, and the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design—along with 80 departments, programs, institutes, and centers that span the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics.

Academic Advising in the College of Arts & Sciences

We are a team of professional academic advisors and administrators focused on providing support and expert guidance to undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences, including the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design, the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, and the Media School. The College Advising service is part of the Academic Engagement and Student Experience (AESE) team, along with the Walter Center for Career Achievement, the College International Programs Office, and the Undergraduate Recruiting Team.

Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides academic advising for a diverse community of students pursuing or considering undergraduate majors, minors, or certificates in the College of Arts and Sciences.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates, guiding them in planning their course of study in concert with departmental curricular requirements and explaining curriculum requirements and campus policies.
  • Meets with students in groups and one‑on‑one to guide them in academic programs that meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
  • Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction, helping them assess their interests, values, and academic skills.
  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies, empowering student accountability in academic decisions.
  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources such as academic support, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, and more.
  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential records, and communicates information in a timely manner to students and appropriate academic offices.
  • Represents the advising function at campus meetings and recruiting functions, and assists in developing written advising materials for student events.
  • Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs, and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.
Education

Required: Master’s degree in a related field.

Preferred: Master’s degree in a liberal arts field.

Work Experience

Required: 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field; experience in a student‑focused, higher‑education environment is highly desired.

Preferred: 3 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Compensation

$50,000 annualized wage, paid monthly.
