Job summary

Pima Community College is seeking an Academic Advisor to help students set academic goals and access relevant information and services, both online and in person. The role includes high-level academic guidance, identifying at‑risk students, and coordinating orientations and events to strengthen student pathways.

The advisor will collaborate with deans, faculty, and staff, supporting enrollment and strategic initiatives while offering flexible scheduling and potential local travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education or a closely related field is required.
• One to three years of related experience are required.
• Valid Arizona driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

• Aids students in setting academic goals and providing information and services.
• Provides high‑level academic advice guiding students to align with interests, goals, abilities and degree requirements.
• Identifies at‑risk students and develops individual academic plans to ensure correct coursework and progress tracking.
• Creates, schedules, and conducts new student orientations, group advisory sessions, and events including partnerships.
• Networks with industry and educational leaders, attends advisory board meetings, and updates practices accordingly.
• Meets with current and prospective students to facilitate planning and scheduling and address concerns.
• Compiles, analyzes, and monitors course requests and approvals.
• Analyzes confidential student information to identify issues and recommend actions.
• Provides information on College policies, practices, trends in student development theory, and applicable laws and regulations.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Education or closely related field

Job description

The Academic Advisor aids students in setting academic goals and acquiring relevant information and services. Provides high-level academic advice to guide students into making decisions consistent with interests, goals, abilities, and degree requirements both on-line and in-person; identifies at‑risk students. Serves as a liaison between division deans, faculty, and area staff to develop and support the execution of strategic initiatives. Participates in outreach events to increase enrollment and awareness. Performs administrative tasks including registration, paperwork processing, and resource referral. The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings and weekends and local travel.

• Ensures programmatic advice and course recommendations provide student pathways for transfer and employment opportunities
• Develops individual academic plans to ensure students register for correct coursework and tracks progress to identify at‑risk students for additional support
• Creates, schedules, and conducts new student orientations, group advisory sessions, and events including internal and external partnerships
• Networks with industry and educational leaders, attends advisory board meetings, and translates industry changes into updated academic practices to ensure programmatic alignment with student pathways and course recommendations
• Meets individually with current and prospective students to facilitate academic planning and scheduling and address student concerns. Compiles, develops, analyzes, and monitors course requests and approvals
• Analyzes confidential student information; identifies issues and discrepancies; and, formulates recommendations for appropriate action based on findings
• Provides technical information and interpretation of College policies, practices and procedures; best practices, trends in student development theory; and, Federal and state laws and regulations to ensure student compliance
• Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor
• Bachelor's degree in Education or a closely related field of study and
• One to three years of related experience and
• Valid Arizona driver license

or

• An equivalent combination of certification, education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above

Preferred:

• Three to five years of related experience
• Knowledge of advising and counseling practices as well as college policies and procedures
• Knowledge of internal and external customer service principles and practices
• Knowledge of principles and methods for promoting programs and services
• Knowledge and application of various instructional methodologies
• Skill in analyzing data and drawing conclusions
• Skill in effective communication (both written and oral)
• Skill in organization, coordination and management
• Skill in public speaking
• Ability to develop and maintain effective and positive working relationships
