Job summary

SVSU Saginaw Valley State University is seeking an Advising Specialist to support new and continuing students with curriculum requirements, academic progress, and course scheduling. The temporary, 1-year position ends 9/24/2027 and sits in the Academic Advisement Center, assisting with orientation activities and COOP Chat Bot program.

The role focuses on advising first- and second-year students and requires strong communication, teamwork, and flexible scheduling abilities to support student

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 1 year of related work experience.
• Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and under occasional pressure.
• Ability to work as a team with administration, faculty, and staff.
• Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule.
• Ability to develop and implement creative strategies for program-specific recruitment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software quickly.
• Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community.
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

Responsibilities

• Provide information and assistance to students concerning academic programs, curricula, academic requirements, and related policies.
• Advise students in the selection of an academic program and related course selection.
• Perform individual advising with students in various modalities (online/virtual, email, face-to-face).
• Participate in programs and services for new students (e.g., Orientation, Transfer Orientation).
• Direct students toward support services and help centers as needed.
• Maintain timely records of interactions, referrals, and degree progress decisions.
