Job description

Overview

A warm, thoughtful family in the Cascade Canyon neighborhood of Mill Valley, CA is seeking two experienced Newborn Care Specialists (NCS) to provide overnight newborn care and support following the arrival of their second child, due January 24, 2027, for approximately 3 to 4 months. Their first child was born 10 days early.

The family is hoping to establish a consistent, reliable overnight care arrangement that allows the parents to rest and recover while feeling confident that their newborn is in capable, attentive hands. The family would like to engage two NCS professionals who can share coverage, preferably individuals who have worked together previously and have a compatible approach to newborn care.

The ideal team will bring substantial hands‑on newborn experience, sound judgment, excellent communication skills, and a calm, reassuring presence. The family values collaboration and evidence‑based safety practices, and appreciates a specialist who can share knowledge, explain recommendations, and adapt to the family's preferences without being overly rigid or prescriptive.

The family is open to discussing slight schedule alterations for the right candidates, but the preferred option is:

One NCS Monday–Friday and a second NCS Saturday–Sunday.

A second option may be one NCS Monday–Thursday and a second NCS Friday–Sunday.

The hours will generally be 9:00 PM–7:00 AM.

Candidates who have previously worked successfully with another NCS and can offer a consistent, collaborative overnight care arrangement are especially encouraged to apply. Local candidates are preferred, as accommodations will not be provided.

Responsibilities

Overnight Newborn Care

  • Provide attentive, developmentally appropriate overnight care for the newborn.
  • Support feeding, burping, diapering, soothing, and settling throughout the night.
  • Monitor the baby's sleep and feeding patterns and communicate observations to the parents.
  • Follow safe sleep practices and maintain a safe sleep environment.
  • Maintain accurate, timely records of feeds, sleep, diaper changes, and other relevant observations using the Baby Connect app or similar
  • Help establish healthy sleep habits and age-appropriate routines while respecting the baby's developmental stage and the family's preferences.

Parent Education & Communication

  • Provide practical guidance and education to help the parents feel confident caring for their newborn.
  • Offer clear explanations of newborn behavior, feeding patterns, sleep development, and soothing techniques.
  • Communicate proactively and provide a thorough handoff at the end of each shift.
  • Share observations and recommendations while remaining open to the family's questions, preferences, and decisions.
  • Collaborate with the parents on feeding approaches and daytime routines to promote consistency between day and night care.
  • Help the family navigate the baby's evolving sleep patterns and developmental milestones over the course of the engagement.

Collaboration & Consistency

  • Work collaboratively with the family and the second NCS to maintain continuity of care.
  • Keep detailed records and communicate important updates between caregivers.
  • Follow agreed‑upon routines and safety protocols while allowing for reasonable adjustments as the baby's needs change.
  • Stay current on the latest research and recommendations regarding infant care and share relevant updates or incorporate them into your approach when appropriate.
  • Infant's laundry; clean and sanitize pump parts, bottles, and clean toys or other infant items
  • Keep nursery organized
