Job summary

The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) is part of the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities, serving coastal communities and keeping Alaska moving with reliable marine service. We are seeking a 2nd Assistant Engineer to oversee engine room operations, perform maintenance, and lead emergency response activities aboard AMHS vessels.

This role requires valid USCG credentials, TWIC, a DOT drug test, and a current medical certificate, with rotation aboard ships along Alaska’s

Qualifications

  • Valid USCG MMC with STCW endorsements including Basic Safety Training, Survival Craft, Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch, and Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties.
  • TWIC card required.
  • Current DOT drug test within last 6 months.
  • USCG medical certificate (STCW 2yr date).
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee safe and efficient operation of engineering machinery, equipment and spaces; log relevant data.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on engine room machinery and auxiliary equipment; supervise repairs by crew or shore-side technicians.
  • Lead lifeboat and emergency response teams; maintain professional watch and ensure crew readiness.
